w202 breaking my heart as usual

Hi

Has it a MAF/Air Mass sensor or is the sensor ypour chatting about the intake temperature sensor?? Earlier cars didnt have a MAF as far as i know.

230K

ok went out on a long drive today, and it happened again, this time the car cut out and i started it up again and it was ok,next time it happened i popped the bonnet and the engine was bouncing like mad,i pulled out the sensor just before the throttlebody and it corrected itself, and ive left the sensor of to see how the car goes, and it hasnt happened yet,is it ok to drive the car with the sensor disconnected, heres what my engine is like its not a picture of mine its some picture of the net

im going to change the cps tommorow, hopefully thatll solve the probem thanks for your help

If you have one the MAS (aair mass sensor) would be on the left hand side of the engine (in that pic) just where the bend to bring the pipe forward to the air filter housing is. Doesn't sound like what you unplugged, if it was closer to the throttle body. Can you pinpoint what you unpluged on the photo?

As 230K was suggesting that's the air intake temperature sensor. Did you disconnect the sensor or just pull out as in the photo?

Running with the air temperature sensor electrically disconnected shouldn't cause any issues. If you have it pulled out as the photo this will allow air to enter through the hole - would upset the MAS readings - if you have one. So while we are there - is there a MAS the other side of the engine or not? Part no 5 on the top diagram here.

thanks for the help stevesey no there is no mas on the other side of the engine, thats the only thing that goes in to the air intake, and i just disconnected it, i didnt take it out as in photo

OK so run with it disconnected for a while to see if the problem goes away - the ECU will assume a default air-intake temp which should be OK (probably more-so at this time of year).

I have the same problem aswell,
I was told the earlier 202 runs off manifold pressure,Not M.A.F?
I am in the same boat mate and i have got to the point of wanting to get shot of the 202 now.
I have changed PLUGS,COIL,LEADS,AIR TEMP SENSOR(that thing in the pic)
I also cleaned out the throttle valve flap. (not sure of the real name)

Someone i work with said you have to reset the throttle valve after you have cleaned it. somehow? could this be true?

I had a similar problem on my W124 E220. It was the OVP relay. Sadly I have no idea if W202s have such a thing so I apologise if this is a totally spurious post! Just trying to help.

just an update, ok i ve fixed my problem,it hasnt happened in two weeks, so this is what i changed ,fuel pump fuel filter, and the regeneration valve,i changed all theese on the same day,and it hasnt happened since, the good thing about having a donor car is i can just switch things to rule things out so, its not costing me, so if youre symptoms are the same as mine,it could be one of the things ive changed, good luck with fixing your car, it had my head wrecked for weeks

Good to get a result, for future reference, have you plugged back in the air sensor you removed as in previous picture, are you ruling it out as the cause of the fault?

Dec

yes ive plugged the air sensor back in,its running grand now, even better than it had been,it seems alot smoother and quicker, so im happy

Good stuff, glad to hear you got it fixed.

I had a similar symptoms caused by a faulty crank sensor. In my case a split water hose had soaked the sensor. Once the sensor was removed and the air blown out it behaved perfectly again.

If you replaced all those things and its still messed up, check the engine loom.

If the loom is OK, then all you have left is the ETA. Replace the Electronic Throttle Actuator.

I had to replace mine on the 220E, the engine would cut completly whenever I tried to coast / maintain speed. It would rev freely, no problem, but if I tried to maintain ANY speed, it would cut the engine until idle and then climb back up again, cuttin again, etc...

Thanks for the thread, similar problem to my C180.
