Being new to this forum I must apologize, in advance, if I incorrectly complete my first post. My pride and joy is a 2000 W202 C220 CDI which, despite many miles on the clock, runs very well and, basically, will probably end up being cited in divorce proceedings in the not too distant future. Can anyone please tell me where exactly on my vehicle I can find the diesel powered auxiliary booster heater that I would dearly like to work now the mornings are becoming cold and icy. MB want an absolute fortune to replace the unit which will require a second mortgage! If I can find it I may be able to reduce the cost somewhat. Any help or advice would be much appreciated - Santefe999

IIRC its under the nearside wing plastic cover? does it have the switch in the ashtray compartment?

The switch for it is on the gear lever console, the corner nearest the drivers seat. I know that when the red light is on the unit is switched off but, even with the light out and the temperature below 6c the unit does not work. - santefe999

On a W202 you should find the auxiliary heater just behind the bumper, on the right, if it is the same for RHD cars. The exhaust pipe should be visible under the car, unfortunately you cannot locate it from the exhaust gas coming out.

These units have pretty much issues. On my W221 I've changed the version coding to avoid automatic starting of the heater. Very short trips are bad for the burner.

Thanks for that. it explains why I can't see it! Do you know if they are made by Eberspacher? I've made some enquiries and they have an authorised agent fairly near. Great forum!! - santefe999

The OEM heater booster should be from Webasto, Thermo Top S on older W202 cars and Thermo Top C on later models. I'm not sure if Eberspächer could be used instead, the local expert should know.

A good Webasto agent should be able to provide you with the info you want. Also, I believe that MB had a kit, for LHD cars at least, which turned the booster heater into a parking heater as well.

Update - Problem solved! New Webasto heater unit fitted. Initial problems with the small pulse pump that was seized solid but my friendly local garage took it to pieces and freed it off. The system now works perfectly and the water coming out of the unit is VERY hot. Can't believe the difference and a reasonable bill as well. Couldn't be better. Many thanks to all for your help.. Great forum!! - santefe999

I must get my heater checked. It does work but stinks.

I notice from the Webasto web site that they do remote control systems for auxiliary heaters. I must investigate whether they can be added to the Merc standard fit heaters.

I like the idea of turning on the heater on a snowy winter morning from the comfort of my kitchen before going to work

There are service parts for aux heaters, like burner inserts.

A separate tele-start kit should exist (at least has existed B6 614 00 55 for a W202). The installation guide does not mention any coolant pump, I guess it is included in the car even if it had no timer or tele-start. Should be limited to electronic parts installation only then.

Installation of a non-OEM heater (even if it was the same brand) may not be straightforward for new cars because the heater blower needs to be controlled via CAN bus. The OEM retrofit kit makes it easy.

W202 220cdi booster heater on veg oil

Does anybody know whether this booster heater on the w202 220cdi can run on veg oil? Also none of the workshop manuals e.g. Haynes mention this heater is there a info sheet or something readily available?

Do you mean by installing a seperate tank to feed the heater, or are you running your car on veg (apparently not a good idea on common rail diesel engines)?

It doesn't seem to be possible to upload files to the forum but if you PM me your email address I can send you a PDF document with information about the Webasto Thermotop Z, which is most likely what you have.

booster heater fuses?

Where is the fuse box for this booster heater located?

Thanks for the webasto manual link(thermotop C).
I have read through, and located my heater is behind the osf bumper grille, under the engine air filter, seems pretty inaccesible as i have lowerd sport model.

if i understand the manual, it says that the webasto heater can enter a lock out condition, which can only be reset by removing fuse F1 for 10 seconds and this is located in 'connector box' with 2 other fuses. their suggested schematic sites the fuses inside the car, but neither mercedes manuals nor haynes manual give ANY info about where the webasto fuse box is or how to gain access to the heater from underneath to remove/repair either.

my thinking is that at this point, rather than start dismantling the underside of my car, i should first ask others, where the fuses are???

I know my heater worked last March when i bought the car(although some diesel smell inside), but not working now as its colder than 5c and no heat till 15 mins. the cut off switch illuminates when on, and is off. the only odd thing i note is the recirculation button's red led doesnt work now. i checked the heating fuses in the normal fusebox, all ok

You can get to the heater by jacking the car up and removing the front wheel and the plastic wheel arch liner.

Ps this thread is over 2 years old:D

still have not found fuses but did find problem:
webasto power connector rotten. design fault. the connector is directly in front of vents where high pressure tyre spray will get to, and the sealing between wires and connector loose, so build up road salt and positive wire and pin completely rotted away: solution difficult:
remove circuit board top 4 posidrive screws, solder a wire onto large diode feed end(continuity same as rotten pin), burn hole through abs for wire to exit, seal with sealant, replace lid etc, solder wire directly to +12v feed wire on loom

in my case i removed entire unit which means draining gallon of antifreeze and replacing 2 of the 4 mounting studs that broke off rotten, with new threads/bolts, about 3 hours work.
while i had it on bench i removed fan cover and freed off corrosion that may have prevented it spinning.

initial testing negative, but prob full of air blocks in fuel/water etc, 10 minute drive and was running a treat in sub zero temps, great.

all i need to do now is check circulation pump not seized, which prob essential to get full heat.

tip; grease all terminals before they rot, particulARLY where wires are exposed to salt water and go into connectors.

btw mercedes didnt have a clue, and i suspect new unit would have cost a grand?

It is not only essential for full heat but the water at the heater would boil and cut out the heater if the circulation pump does not work (engine off).

Old post but i bumping it.

I have a kit to my w202 99 220cdti. It will turn my webasto to a parking heater.

Since this is a universal kit I need to know which cables I shall use. (Webasto in Norway could not help me)

best reg.
