C180 estate
Hi Guys,

You have been so helpful with my other problems with my C180 (both cured now - thanks!) I wondered if you could help me with this one!

I've recently purchased a 1996 pre facelift C180 estate and there is only the 'flat' or emergency key with it, no remote fob. It's the type with no door lock in the drivers door, just the flashy lights - which I have yet to see flash!

I know I can probably get a new remote from the MB main stealers but is there any other way around it? I have been offered a lockset with keys, fob and alarm module for £70 which I thought was quite reasonable.

My question is: is it possible to change the complete lockset and associated parts? :dk:

It does concern me that (somewhere!) somebody must have the original keys and fob and would be quite happy to change the locks for piece of mind.

Please help!

While im certainly not an expert on this, it occurs to me that if you're gonna change the door lock & the module, surely you'd have to change the ignition lock as well ?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

The ignition lock is included in the lockset so, yes, it would be changed as well but I've been told that you can't just swop all these parts.
I would have thought that as long as I change the full lockset and the alarm module then surely it would all work with the key fob which came with it?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received as I don't want to buy and fit these bits if they're not going to work!

& the boot lock, gonna take a long time fitting, even if its possible .Hopefully an expert will come along soon.

Just wondered if anyone could help me on this one please?

I've priced a new remote fob for my car and it's going to cost £185 plus VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any ideas about whether I can change the lockset and alarm module would be gratefully received........................................................

Knowing that the pre-facelift MBSS also includes an immobiliser as well as the alarm system, I'd want to know exactly what parts of the MBSS are involved. Is it just the (Scorpion?) alarm unit, or are there other parts involved?

IMHO, even for £70.00 vs. £185.00 + VAT I'd just bite the bullet and buy a new key. You have no guarantee that swapping it all around is going to work, and it's a fair bit of hassle changing all[/] of the locks (glovebox, ignition, passenger door, boot + the siren defeat keyswitch)

At least the new fob will be brand new, the 10+ year old ones are quite likely to fail soon anyway. What do you do when the keyfob from the £70.00 set fails - you won't be able to order one from MB for love nor money!

Hope you get it sorted :)

I'm with Will on this one. Go for the original MB setup- bite the bullet and get an MB key/fob. First tho -pursue the previous owners [registration document] by phone if you can as to the fate of the previous fobs- in all probability they will have both failed and been discarded but worth asking? the only possible hitch is that the convenience module that controls the central locking has also failed then your complete swop of all units makes more sense. The key failure/ lost is so common tho that its the most likely explanation.

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated! :thumb:

After reading this and trawling through several other posts I think my best option is to bin the original alarm and fit a spurious one.
And is it an easy job to disconnect it? :dk:
