I want to change the gearbox oil, and the Haynes manual states that ATF should be used. Is this correct?

Yes, I think AFT is correct. That's what I used in mine, anyway.

Hi,
I think it depends on the year of your car to what oil is used, I personally would get the correct oil from MB for it.

Mine's a 1995 (old style bumpers, no side air bags). Is there anything I should know about draining and refilling, or is straightforward?

ATF Dexron II is fine for this... It doesnt take a huge amount anyway.
