W202 rain sensor?

Did the 99 W202's come with perhaps optional rain sensors?

When its raining and my wiper is switched to the 1st on position it seems to move according to the intensity of the rain. When I got under a bridge it stopped wiping then when I came out it wiped...aswell when I stop at a light it slows down or stops again depending on the rain.

What feature is this?

um... rain sensing wipers? thats what they do...

do you have a small sensor on the windscreen next to the rear view mirror? thats the sensor.

all 202's iirc have a mode where they slow to the next mode down (fast > medium... medium > intermittent) when stopped. well, my old one did.

My '99 W202 saloon doesn't have a rain sensor, yet when I slow down and stop at lights, the wipers slow down. Intermittent > stop , Continuous > Intermittent. Never tried stopping with the wipers on fast! I think this behaviour is something else, a precursor to the rain sensor, which almost does the same thing.

The presence of a rain sensor could be tested by throwing a bucket of water over the car on the driveway. One other member here (I forget who) who tried to clean his rain sensor equipped screen on the driveway, managed to drench the suit he was wearing at the time when the wipers *unexpectedly* started working!

I see a little blue sensor but maybe this is for the remote locking?

the blue sensor is for the rain sensor.

And , without the rain sensor , the car will go to intermittant when stopped if in position 2 or 3.

It will go to position 2 style when in position 3 and doing under 5kph or whatever IIRC.

The sensor is on the back of the windscreen near the RVM. Look on the front of the windscreen and you should see a small round umasked aperture between the rear of the windscreen and the sensor box. This is the rain sensor window.

I'll check again but whatever it is I like the feature!
