W202 tailgate stuck closed

Hi, my fathers w202 1996 estate tailgate has decided not to open
The key turns & c/locking clunks but he has no resistance when he pulls the lever.
Anyone any ideas how to open it?

my 99 estate did the same thing yesterday in the rain whilst trying to put my dog in!fiddled with the blade key in the lock. lock unlock a fair few times.then with the remote pulling slightly on the lever it then opened. today I have tried to replicate the fault but to no avail
works perfectly. if it happens again and I solve it i will post the solution.
