C180 estate
Hi from a newbie!

I've just bought myself a 1996 W202 C180 manual estate, my first ever MB and I love it!

Basically the front wiper isn't working, you can hear the motor running but nothing happens. I've been looking on the internet but there is so much information out there I just don't know where to start...............

Also, when you turn on the ignition there is a noise from the dash area which sounds almost like the heater fan running but that is switched off.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on either of these problems please? Any info would be helpful!

And this website is ace!

The noise in the dash area is probably the ambient temperature "sniffer" in the dome light which has a little fan on it. Sometimes the fan gets dusty or the bearings go and it makes quite a loud noise until it's warm and up to speed, quite disconcerting. Worst case you could replace the fan but they make noise even when not faulty.

Hi Schude,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I've had another look at the car and, although it sounds to be from the dash, it is much louder when you lift the bonnet. It seems to be under the wiper area but does sound a bit like a fan running, could it still be the 'sniffer'?

And thanks again :thumb:

Remove the fuse for the heater fan located under bonnet driver’s side, beside brake fluid tank, list of consumers is under fuse box lid. Dose noises now go away when ignition is turned on?

EDIT
Refer to this here… http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/windshield_wiper.htm .. and remove the trim at bottom of windscreen so as to have a look at the situation regarding the wiper.
It seems the wiper mechanism has detached or become loose from the motor, tell us what happens when the wiper is turned on.

I've done this and it makes no difference but I did notice while I had my head in the fusebox that the noise is definately louder under the bonnet. I stuck my head further in and have tried to locate where it is coming from and it appears to eminate from the throttle body?????? Any ideas?

I won't get chance to tackle the wipers until the weekend so, thanks for the link, I'll let you know how I get on!

Cheers!

Hi Dec,

Thanks again for the precise information, I'll have a go at the weekend. From what I've read it sounds like the nut may have come off or be loose.

I'll start a new thread in the engine section about the noise now we've found where it's coming from, it's weird and has got 3 of us foxed!

Cheers for the info!

Hi Peeps!

Just to let you know that I've finally got the wipers in bits and the problem is that the gears in the motor have stripped, so I need a new wiper motor - bums ):

But thanks for all your help and the articles on how to get it all to bits and how to set it up correctly when I've finished!

Cheers!

No idea about the noise, all depends exactly where it is and what sound it makes.

Regarding the wiper, it is likely that either nut 1 or nut 2 is loose, see the first picture here…
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/bodywork/47456-c-class-180-93-wipers-park-mid-screen.html … it will be necessary to remove the mechanism from the car to correct the fault.

Hi Dec, thanks for the awesome picture diagrams. I was driving home tonight & turned my wiper on. the wiper got stuck half way back. i could hear the motor still struggling but then it gave up. I pulled over & turned the wiper on & off. while i could hear the motor I forced/helped it back to start position. I drove futher down & the visibility becam bad again so i had no choice but to turn the wiper on. same thin happened. i done it 1 more time but didnt want to destroy the motor or anything.

will the remedy you posted above remedy fix the problem?

I appreciate your help

From your description of the fault its probably striped gear drive inside the motor gearbox, it is also possible but less likely to be a loose nut on the rear of the mechanism.

Remove the trim to get access to the motor

Remove the 7 torx bolts on the motor gear box and check for damage to the big nylon gear, any signs of “rice” shavings then the gear is damaged, you will need a new motor.
Be sure to get the correct motor for your cars year.

Also lubricate the wiper mechanism;
