Hi all, I have done some searches and found similar symptoms but not my exact ones.

W202 (2000) 220cdi

Has happened twice previous to this, I have driven off and soon realised the car wont shift up the gears, also the display to show your current gear is backlit but no display of the gear is shown. After switching off until those displays go blank after 20 seconds or so, i then switch on and the car works as normal with the display.

I have just returned now from a few days away so the car has been sitting, cold and wet weather and I have the issue as before, but I have tried switching it on and off a few times but no luck, she just wont come back with the display.

Also each of these times when I put it into D or R it jerks into it insted of being smooth as usual. Gear changes are fine when its working so I dont believe its an oil issue.

Anyone any ideas I could try? I read an interesting one about battery voltage where the box will almost lock out for protection if it detects low voltage during startup though this persons problem didn't state that their display was blank.

Thanks in advance for any help. Ill see if i can borrow a battery tomorrow to rule that out, need to get back on the road quick as its my only means for getting to work.

As above check the fluid level, but I think your gear display being blank will be the gear selector lever, not uncommon to fail.
I think before you start replacing parts is to get a diagnostic done on the car preferably with STAR.

As Andy says , gear selector.

We just had exactly the same thing on our ML , £380 plus fitting.

Thanks guys, what is the gear selector? An electronic device? I know a guy with a snap-on diagnostic kit so ill get it put on that first as I cant drive to mercedes in first gear

It is very likely to be the gear selector.

It is part of the gear lever assembly.

I have a 202 gear selector module avaliable, should this be diagnosed as the problem (very likely)

Hopefully find out tomorrow if the guys can see any bad codes etc, out of interest how much would the module be?
Also is it a dry component I can replace myself, swap out for the other one and reconnect some plugs? Cheers

is yours the later tiptronic model ? with the gear display on the clocks?

Yes its the tiptronic. At mechanics now and gear selector is one code thats come up. Just waiting to find out the rest

Thanks to everyone giving help on my problem, here I have the results from the diagnostics, the codes have been cleared and the car is now working fine ( how long for I don't know )

Autobox faults 034 and 130 CAN communication disturbed electronic gear selector

engine fault p1630 drive authorization

Gear selector faults p1856 fault in selector lever test

This is how they have written it on my receipt, does anyone know what to make of that?

Its a bit of a paint to change as you have the lever on the bottom that connects to the box, but otherwise not too bad.

If you need the shift module, all I ask is what I paid for it, £110 + shipping. It took me a long time to find a second hand one for my 208, then the car was written off!

Sorry £75 not 110! still about if you need it

c240 tiptronic stuck in park wont change gear

i have a c240 estate 1999 auto tiptronic which keeps sticking in park and when i manage to shift to drive it will not change gear i have changed the brake light switch and that is working the car was parked for 2 years i put a battery on it and drove it home and it was selecting gears tiptronic was working and now 3 days later it is having these issues

Hi all,
I'm hoping to buy an X reg c220 W202 very soon.
It's got a fault whereby once in drive it won't shift up but also won't then go back into reverse without first turning the engine off.
On the first test drive it did temporarily fix itself and drove flawlessly.

I'm going to check fluid level first but what's been described in this thread now seems to be the second thing to try?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Yes I still have it.
