Hi people, I've had a search through other posts but can't seem to find anyone having the same problem as my old man is.

His 2002 W203 220 CDI seems to start fine most of the time, but occasionally and when he needs it most (as is always the case  ) it just will not start. The car will start and run fine for days and weeks on end, starting numerous times throughout the day. But then sometimes it won't fire. It turns over but won't start. I've tried the "keep trying, build up pressure in the fuel rail" thing to no avail.

As I say, its totally random and can happen two or three times in one week, then start fine for a few days, or a few weeks even, then it does it again. Then a few hours could pass, or a few more days, or weeks before it throws in the towel once more.

This seems to differ from other CDI cases where they get gradually worse and then completely fail to start after a point.

The car has done approx 140k miles, has full history from main dealer and Merceds specialist (Alan @ Carluke MOT centre, 20 odd years with Mercedes Glasgow) and recently had a diesel leak fixed, corroed/perrished seal IIRC. Alan had the car for almost a week during which time the car started fine every time and he could find no faults.

Is this just the same as other cases? Should we gat the injectors out for a flow/refurb? Or does the whole "randomness" of the symptoms suggest an electrical fault, possibly a bad earth on the fule pump?

So many questions!!!

Thanks in advance for your knowledgeable responses.

The crank shaft sensor is the most likely cause,, it would not be air in the system as then the fault would occur every day

Cheaper from Bosch service center

think mine is the same, did you find a solution
