I've posted this on the 'otherside' too but thought it might get more answers from both...
I've searched all these forums and not found anything resembling my problem.
I have a '02 C270 and it's developing a bit of an annoying gear change problem in that when you accelerate hard, it makes a whining/hissing sound as it changes gear... much like you hear on public transport buses. There has also being a few times when the gear change has been quite violent, like it was suddenly forced into a lower gear quite hard to the point where it jumps into neutral (me thinks a safety feature). At that point there is no drive at all even after putting into neutral and back into drive. The only way I can get it to engage drive again is to bring the car to a complete stop (quite risky when you've just floored it down a slip road onto a motorway, and suddenly lost drive), then re-engage into drive after coming to a compete stop. Then all seems to work again, albeit that the whining noise is still there when gear changing. This also seems to be more likely to happen when the car is hot and been running for a while.
Another thing I noticed more recently is that when the car is cold, ie first thing in the morning, if you accelerate fairly hard, when it attempts to change from first to second it appears to 'miss' the change and stay in first (you can hear the engine reduce power as it normally does before changing) but somehow doesn't succeed with the change on the first attempt. It does succeed tho on the second attempt a few seconds later... don't know if it's related.
Now, I recently took it into my local indie and told him about the problem and also asked him to check the gearbox oil etc. He found nothing and said it might just be low battery voltage?!?
Anyway, it's becoming increasingly annoying that I have to drive carefully just to allow smooth gear change, especially when you have 2.7l turbo diesel - takes some will power I tell ya!
Any takes?
