My brake pedal travel seems rather a lot. It goes down a good 3-4 in before the brakes are on. If I pump the pedal, the travel is only about an inch which is more like I would expect. The brakes are good and solid, not soft or spongy and the pads have got plenty of wear in them, front and back, the front discs are less than 1000 miles old. In the good old days of drum brakes I would say they needed adjusting up a bit but surely with discs, this isn't an option.
Any ideas please?

Usually a sign that the system needs bleeding / air in the system. Look for brake fluid weeping from the calipers or master cylinder. Although it could just be that the fluid needs changing as it deteriorates over time.

No adjustment with hydraulic disc brakes, they are self adjusting.

If the pedal gets harder, or with less travel after pumping, is a sure sign that the system needs bleeding and/or fluid needs to be changed as it is hydroscopic (absorbs water )

Have you just perchased the car? Or have you owned it for a while and noticed a change in that time?
