Hello, my first post, unable to find an answer on this anywhere. Should the engine check light illuminate when the ignition is switched on, before actual engine start? I don't appear to have one and wonder if the previous owner has removed it, but maybe it only lights up if there is a fault? 2005 W203 C180K.

From memory yes all lights come on with ignition but I don't remember specifically regarding EML.. will check tomorrow.

Shot of cluster check lights below, with ignition on. They should all extinguish with the exception of the Parking Brake and Seat Belt lights when the engine is started.

I do have an additional Glow Plug light, with mine being a diesel, but that goes out after a second or two so is not visible in the photo.

So, yes you should have Engine Check Light. Could be a bulb failure or as you say the previous owner has removed it for some reason. It has also been known for the cluster to be taken out and a piece of black tape stuck to cover the back of that part of the display.

P.S. Please excuse the 'F*ck knows', I renamed my phone due to not recognising the model number code when anyone tried to Bluetooth something to me.

Thanks markjay

grumpyoldgit, yes thanks I though the light should be on, are these standard bulbs do you know? I guess I will have to find a thread on removing the dash pod :wallbash:

You could also have the car pluged into MB STAR diagnostic computer, it will tell you if there are any fault codes.

It runs for about 100 yards, then the throttle is unresponsive and the car idles about 1500rpm, so there are some issues, I am thinking oil in the wiring loom, but could not understand why no check light, then realised it does not come on at startup so thought I would ask here.

Idle should be 600.

Re oil in loom, disconnect the two electrical connectors for the Camshaft Position Sensors at the front of the engine and check for oil.

Look for two small holes, one either side of the cluster. Lower the steering wheel rake to lowest position.

No oil in connectors, though the MAF and breather hoses were full of oil before a cleaned it all out.

Found my check light under a small pile of black electrical tape, it now glows happily while I drive :-/

You need to get it diagnosed with STAR, the dedicated Mercedes diagnostic machine. Do you have an independent Mercedes garage nearby? Cheaper that a main dealer.

A very naughty thing to do, sticking tape over the light. Obviously to hide the fact that there are faults.

How long have you had the car and did you buy it from a motor trader?
