Hi All

Another day another problem......

Since the last couple of weeks ive noticed the sound of the car has changed and now resembles a diesel!!! I had a mate sit in it over the weekend who actually thought it was a diesel!!!!

Problem seems to be occuring from the exhaust and when the car moves off from a stationary position. It sounds very rough and i have also noticed a slight lack in acceleration.

Anyone know what the problem could be? My initial thoughts were that the exhaust may need replacing. I am hoping it is not something more sinister!

Mileage is around 55,000 and the car was first registered in November 2001. I know Kompressors are a bit noisy but i have definately noticed an increased 'roughness'.

its possible you may have hit something and split the exhaust that may cause the increase in noise, i doubt very much its the kompressor as this whistles. i`ve had this problem on my previous w203, spoke to an indy who said because i was doing just local miles it needed a good blast up the motorway, something to do with carbon build up, try and find if the noise is coming from rear of the car or the front as the rear will tell you its the silencer/exaust, i`m more convinced from what you tell that its the exaust hope this helps

It could be that the exhaust manifold has cracked,Its not unheard of on the earlier cars.Does it sound like this when the engine has warmed up?

Hi huys

thanks for the replies... much appreciated.

There are no warning lights inside and the car does improve slightly once warmed up. Once the car has started to move it sounds ok... its only when moving from a stationary position it is quite loud.

The thing is i drive with my windows up usually so i had'nt noticed the problem until now. I think i'll get a local indie to look at it next week. Just hope the outcome is not too painful!

Regards

It might just be one of the wheels that the alternator belts turns has gone funny becuase I have a similar problem and the mechanic said he is going to take the belt off and turn each wheel individually to see if any of them is making a noise. Also, try turning your AC on and listen to your engine and see if the sound is there, then turn the AC completely off and listen again.

Either way, let us know what the outcome is please mate.

i'll post an update when i've had the car looked at. Could be a couple of weeks though.
