w203 combination switch - no water

Hello, all.

I was hoping I could get some help from you masters...

The combination switch doesn't switch on the water for the windshield. She's a 2003 c200cdi estate, elegance level. I have removed the pumps (2) plugs on the water tank, switched them, and made the rear window button actuate the windshield pump. Now, I know the rear system is a relay-based one. But the windshield is an electronic, non-relay based. The electronics of it come from the multiple function control module nr. 1. So, what would be most likely to have gone? The combination switch or the electronic module? Is anyway we can check it or reprogram it via the engineering mode at the command 2.0 panel?

TIA:rolleyes:

The combination switch likely. No way to diagnose the front SAM or the combi switch via Comand. Star could do it.

Thanks for your reply.

Any special care in removing the switch?

This might sound daft, but are you pressing the switch far enough. For the wash function, you have to push it in 'beyond' the first spring action until it clicks.
Just a thought.

Hmmm, doesn't seem to have a second barrier...
Will try and let you know, thanks

Nope...
Looks like something is gone, pushed it all the way to no avail...:(

A kjay says, one must press past the first resistance, hold and then one may have to wait quite a few seconds before water starts, especially if the system hasn't been used in a while.

Or if it's been dismantled!! :)

Have you considered opening the stalk to investigate, the pictures are of a W202 stalk, might be useful?

Ok. I have pushed the stalk over the two barriers; I have switched the 2 pump plugs on the water tank so that the windshield pump would work with the rear comand, and it did.
Now how do I remove/dismantle the stalk switch? I'm cautious and afraid because of the airbag...

Was the link in my last post any use to you? The pictures are for a W202, yours may be similar and likely to work in much the same way.
The stalk is a combination switch, the lower part is a lever switch and the upper part is for wipers so it is the upper part that you need to dismantle, there is no need to involve the steering wheel/airbag.

Thanks dec. But I'm concerned I may damage the switch when I try to dismantle it... Can you post exactly how to dismantle it?

Tks, DEC, that is very well explained. I will give it a go and let you know(my English is not so good...)

I would not go any further than that unless I was definitely going to replace the stalk, if there is a fault inside the mechanism, it is unlikely that it would be repairable.

You are left with two choices, replace the Stalk or replace the Combination Relay.
In the link below, one man solved his problem by replacing the Relay while the other solved it by replacing the Stalk, it’s a 50/50 chance of getting it right. You could go to a dealer first, to have it diagnosed.
