I'm thinking of getting some of those tacky LED strips and mounting them behind the front grill on my w203 coupe.

You wouldn't see the strips on show but you would see a glow from behind the top radiator grill. I haven't seen anyone do this before and don't see why not. Just for a styling feature I think if it's subtle it could work.
What are people's opinions?

What would you be "subtlely" lighting behind the grill? If you put a flashlight behind the grill and stand back I think you'll see the fans and possibly the hood latch assymbly, and there is nothing pretty about that.....

Says it all. I saw a Peugeot 607 with them like that the other day, and it really wasn't a good look.

I'm not against DRLs at all though, but IMHO they do need to be as OEM as possible.

Suicide attempt... Would get errors repeatedly

The lights would be facing forward through the slats in the plastic grill so would be infront of the fans and below the hood latch so wouldn't necessarily show those components, but thank you for your feedback.

I agree with everything looking OEM. With the idea I had you wouldn't see the strips themselves, as they would be mounted behind so only the light from them can be seen through the gaps, but thanks for your feedback.

I already have LED sidelights with built in resistors and would scotch lock the strips into that, so would it still force back errors? Thank you for the feedback nonetheless.
