Hi All.

I have a W203 Sport Coupe 220 Cdi 2002. It is making a horid squeeking sound from the passengers rear. If I push down on the tailgate it 'squeek-squeeks'. When driving it's as though I have a chipmunk in the boot! I have sprayed WD40(!) on all the bushes and movable joints. The car has racked up 150K and apart from the squeek it drives as it should. Any ideas????

Had same on my w210, I did wd40 and squeeek was gone for two weeks now is back aldough not so bad, looks like common problem, I need some advice to :)

W203 coupe squeak from rear

Hi, no definate answers I'm afraid - but after spending a good hour trying to fix my loud squeak thought I'd mention what I tried.
I took the rear wheel off my 180,000 mile 2002 W203 and got a block of wood and a 6 foot bit of 4"x2" arranged so that I could lever under the hub and get the loud squeak by pressing down - or sitting on the end of the wood, and bouncing up and down.
While the squeak was being made I stuck my head in and tried to track down the noise. There are about 10 rubber bushes involved and I tried Silicon spray on all of them - but no joy. The Anti-roll bar is very rusty - with the paint coming off in big rusty chunks. But the noise seemed to be coming from the bottom of the damper. I took out the bolt (had to take off the plastic cover first) put copper grease on it put it all back together and . . . hmm still squeaks - don't think it's as bad as it was though - and the head of the bolt did seem to have wear - and the nut.
Next I will try and take out one or two more bolts and do the same - the sound definitely seemed to be from the lower bushes - or possibly the bottom of the coil spring, difficult to say though because the sound resonates through the large lower strut.
The sound I have is a loud "Hammer House of Horror" type creaking door noise, metal on metal like a hinge. And it used to disappear in the rain.
Will let you know if I sort it.

I have something similar only mine is definitely interior...just above the rear window - it's really irritating when the pano roof is open :(

Lower hub bush - one that connects to the spring pan.

That wear is always there. I suspect it is somthing else

Tracked it down, you're right Stevesey. - the lower arm hub bush. I took out the bolts & sprayed grease into the bolt holes - put it back together and much much better - could hardly hear a squeak. I guessed that the small noise remaining was from the inner bushes. . . .
BUT. a week or two later squeak is back -as loud as ever, I need to replace the outer bushes. Anyone managed to do it without any special tools? In the past I have butchered out bushes by hacksawing through from the inside - and then pulled in the new ones with a suitable socket, grease and a bolt/nut. How much do they cost?
Or will I just be able to tap them in if I freeze them first?
Thanks

W203 Sport Coupe Squeeky rear tailgate

Hi all (though i need to post this exp)

just purchased 56, w203 cdi coupe. Had it 3 weeks then started to hear this squeek. got on my neveres. 2 months down the line after much seaching, found it to be coming from the rear interior panel that runs across the tailgate covering the rear brake light on the tailgate.
Not a very good idea to hold this panel back in the centre with two push clips.
It is held at either end with two screws, however across the centre, behind the panel you will find two push studs (interior merc stud, ebay pkt 10, £3.00.) which you have renew, once broken. This been the causes of the squeek.
In my case it not just the plastic stud that had give way, but the supports that held the studs had broken. All under the pressure of the tailgate been slammed closed. Had it to bits 3 times now and still seem to jump out these plastic studs, so I thinking of something more permant. (maybe some interior fitting that I have to screw through the panel, then cover up with screw covers.
One last thing, you have to remove the black panel below first, so you can get at the screws for the offending panel. (2 hours)
If you have squeek, just push the panel and it will feel lose in the centre. it should be held back nice and firm. Vince,
Ps when i final do mine i'll post photos :wallbash:
