W203 Stepper motor

There was an excellant post on this, but I cannot find it. Its not on the How To section. I have the same issue myself, but not keen on removing half the dashboard to get to the motors with my sausage like fingers.

This thread refers to another HOW TO at another forum.

does anyone know somewhere in the bradford, west yorkshire area of any specialists that can sort this out? I have the annoying ticking from the centre of the dash just behind the radio,

related question

Is this issue confined to C class cars, or can it happen to any Merc with climate control ?

Reason I ask is that my SL has made a strange clicking sound from somewhere behind the dash on the passenger side three times recently (while the weather has been cold), but only one click each time. The first time it happened it was very loud - like a stone hitting the screen at speed - which is what I thought it was at first. Other times much less loud - possibly because something broke at the first click ?

The air con/climate control/defrost/etc still works in what seems a normal way.

The prospect of dismantling an SL dash horrifies me !

I have not had one on a SL just yet. It may not be the same fault.

I've had the clicking sound start in my C320 for the last few months. It started as a occasional thing and now it does it at least once a day, but the clicks are only about a second apart and lasts for about 1-2 minutes:mad:.

It sounds like its coming from the main air vent in the middle of the dash (above the radio) so i'm hoping this might be easier to fix than broken motors in the footwell?

Want to try to get this fixed myself as i've already had the car serviced, and had a new alternator fitted this month.... the other half will soon be jealous that i spend more on my car than her!

Failing that, is there anyone in East Anglia that would be able to help fix this?

Could I add to this thread and ask for assistance. My 2002 203 coupe has developed the same clicking noise. On the initial noisey sequence air comes out of all vents at force as the program goes through it's stages, then settles to it's position at that point when set to blow out of the footwell vents there's very little warth / air coming out of the drivers side vent (slightly more from the passengers). A reading on the star machine stating "left or right footwell vents blocked or stiff" I've taken the central part of the dashboard out & found the motor shown in the diag above. If there's any one else who has had the same problem in the past enlighten me on how they overcame the problem please ?

Hi Everyone, Having been driving BMWs for the past 10 years I have finally made the jump to Mercedes. I've bought a 2002 C200k and have the dreaded clicking sound from the dashboard. I've asked around a few places and have been quoted prices of £500-£600. Seems a little steep even for a dashboard out job. Can anyone recommend someone who can do it for less in the East London area?

Thank you in advance for your advice and help.

As stated, a dashboard removal, fix and replacement is around 11 hours labour so at around £50-55 per hour £600 is going to be the cost, plus parts plus VAT of course.

For perspective: I had the rear brake pipes replaced on my C320 in July by an MB specialist, the cost was £599.99 of which around £31 was for parts, the rest being 8.5 hours labour plus VAT.

It does depend on which motor is faulty. Get your car put on a STAR, preferably at a good independent MB specialist, which will tell you. Some can be done without removing the dash, some can't.

It'll cost you the price of a STAR session to find out ;)

Thank you for your advice. I have been looking at all the DIY info I could find online and am planning to do this on my own. I attached a solus diagnostic on it, and it is showing the left and right foot well ones as being blocked/stiff. Can you recommend a place where I can get the linkage from other than the Stealers?

Try searching for MB parts online, there are many out there, you might be lucky and find someone who has it in stock, Inchcape Mercedes sell a lot of genuine parts online, also try Starpartz.

It is also worth a call to your local dealer though, it is a misconception that parts from MB are always expensive.

It may be helpful to others if you could post links to the online information you have found.

Good luck and report back with how you get on, it would be great if you could take and post pictures as you go :thumb:
