W204 - Starting / Electrical Fault

Hi,

Went to start the car, turned key fully and nothing.

The mileage on the LCD screen comes on as normal, but it is the only visual i get; warning symbols like the handbrake etc don't come on and it doesn't even try to start the engine.

Indicators, headlights and trip controls don't work. Radio doesn't come on straightaway when he key is turned, but it does when i press the on button and it works normally after that.

Hazards and central locking work ok.

Checked he fuses in the engine and boot, all seem ok.

Checked the battery, its ok, tried jump starting it anyway, but it didn't make a difference.

Does anyone have experience of similar, and / or possible reasons on where he fault is coming from and a way to fix it?

Thanks.

Mine done very similar to this at the petrol station after I paid, was a few weeks back. Not a very good feeling! Nothing was working. After a few moments and some near tears it switched on, and haven't (touch wood) experienced any other problems since :dk:

Thank you, but I don't think that is the problem: while the description on that site does fit, I've tried two keys and neither of them work.

I've spoken with a mechanic I know and looked at different information online, both have suggested that the ECU is gone and that I could be looking at a £1,500 replacement / repair.

I've some follow up questions on that and I'd be grateful if someone could come back tk me on them.

I know where the ECU is fitted, its in the engine bay and I can remove it myself.

If I do, can the unit be sent away for repair? I've read mixed information in ECU replacement; the ECU is identified to an individual car, that they can be 'cloned' and that there are companies such as his one that that repair them -

Automotive ECU Testing - ECU Repair and Exchange

Can the ECU be refurbed /repaired?

Can a replacement, either new or secondhand be identified with my car, and if so, does anyone know a company they can recommend?

If a new / repladement is fitted, is it a case of plugging it back in to the car and all will work again? Or will there be resetting / reprogramming that will need to be carried out?

Also, I stay in the Glasgow area, so if there are any recommended repairers nearby I can always take the unit to them it would be good to know who.

Cheers. :thumb:

Hope it stays that way, I'm in near tears at the repair cost.

This unit, on the first picture anyway, I haven't removed it to check the serial / part numbers, matches mine and looks like it has came out of the same model of C Class as mine;

MERCEDES C CLASS W204 2007 - 2014 C220 CDI ENGINE CONTROL UNIT ECU 0054467440 | eBay

Questions would be the same as above - can / does it need to be matched to my car and how / who can that be done by? And would I have any other programming to do and I forgot to say earlier, will my keys match with it?

Hi,

Its going to do it with all keys because its the ESL that is the problem, not unlocking the steering!

The ECU isn't even needed for ignition stage 1 anyway so how can it be that!

So the steering lock is released and you can physically turn the key?

possibly totally unrelated as I have a 1999 clk but exactly the same happened to me and i eventually found a very small yellow plug with 2 wires going to it had come out of its socket. On mine it was located in the relay box under the hood. on mine its where the star diagnostics plug is up near the passenger side of the windscreen.

I plugged it back in (it does not have a tight fit) and everything resumed to normal.

I susspect it has something to do with the alarm/immobiliser this was 4 months ago now and had no repeat issues.
