Hi

My mane is Glen and I live in Merstham in Surrey. This is my 1st post.

My ex wife has an E200 auto estate of 1999 vintage has been running fine since she bought ir 6 months or so ago. Recently though is has been playing up every now and then, but now it's undriveable.

It starts OK, but within a few seconds it will not rev up and pops and bangs horribly. I fitted a new battery a few days ago and it seems to have got worse since then, but that could just be coincidence. I rarely drive it myself.

I have and OBD2 code reader, but can't find a socket to plug it into, so assume it's not OBD compliant.

Any help greatly appreciated - Happy Christmas to all.

Cheers Glen

I had a similar problem with my E220cdi about 6 months ago and it turned out to be a faulty maf sensor, the test is to disconnect the plug from the sensor and see if it runs fine on the preset values. mine did

reminds me, I must get a new sensor in the new year because ive been running it with the sensor disconnected ever since. really should have done it by now.

Happy xmas

Chris

MAF is a likely contender.

Once the car is running, a battery being poor would not produce these effects, since the alternator would more than cover the charge required.

But, if you can get the codes read this should pin point the problem and save you spending on more items you don't need.

In the main fuse box under the bonnet, you will see a round socket, this is where the scanner plugs in, but you will need a lead to convert from oblong plug to round plug.

But a STAR scan will be the best.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi
Thanks for all the helpfull suggestions. I have just got back from Xmas in France, so thats the reason for my tardy reply.

Is the MAF sensor plug, the multipin jobbie in the MAF itself, and the MAF is in the hose to the air filter box?

Cheers

Glen.

Well, as I'm not near the car my 13 year old son took the multi plug off the MAF and reports that it idles better than it did before, but just dies if you touch the acclerator.
This is kind of what I expected to be honest. I imagine Diesels are different and will run in limp mode with the MAF disconected?

So any suggestions for a source of a reasonably priced MAF???

Cheers

Glen.

Hi All

Just to let you know that a new MAF cured the problems.

Thanks for all your help.
