Hi,

I have one of the late W210 E320 models, and recently the temp gauge has been doing some funny things. I have changed the water temp sender and the thermostat, and this seems to have solved the problem. But I have noticed that in traffic the gauge now moves up to just below the 3 quarter mark, where the electric fan cuts in, then once moving again the temp drops back to normal.
Is this correct, I don't remember this happening before? Is there a problem with the switch controlling the fan, is it in fact a different switch from the water temp sender next to the thermostat, if so where is it?
I sat on the M25 for 1.5 hours yesterday with the external temp showing 26.5, and the temp sat solidly at the just below three quarters until we moved and then it dropped, I just don’t know if this is normal, and wondered if I could make the fan cut in earlier?
Thanks,
Martin

It was quite a warm day so if your sitting still I would expect the temp to rise a little, but with the electric fan running it should bring it back to just over half.

thought the fan was controlled by 2 temp switchw thats fitted to the rad

Hi Malcolm,

What fan mod are you refering to?
Martin

On the 210 when you do the mod where the fan controller goes short circuit due to water ingress, and stops the car as it is wired across the engine ECU, the Aux fan is dispensed with.

All 210,s from 01-97 to 31-12-01

Okay, so my 210, that only has 1 electric fan behind the rad, nothing infront, is there a way of "adjusting" the system to make the fan cut in earlier?

Should I be concerned that it got up to that temp yesterday, or am I worrying about nothing?

I think that you are worrying about nothing, there has to be a swing either way, the more narrow the operating band, the more the fan will cut in and out. 100c is the best running temperature

Thanks for that. You know what its like, just want to look after my baby!

So you're saying that as long as the temp gauge only varies between the half way and three quarter mark, I shouldn't worry about it.
Great, maybe now I'll spend less time staring at the temp gauge!

I have played a little more with the fan off and on the car, and have discovered that when the temp reaches just below three quarters on the gauge the fan cuts in, but it isn't running flat out, its only running enough to stop the temp rising, not enough to cool it down. I assume that if it gets hotter the fan speed rises????

If you run the fan directly from a battery it is capable of running considerably faster.

So how is the speed controlled by the car, is there some way of over-riding this so the fan runs faster, cools the car down then switches off?

Any help please?

Martin

Hi Malcolm,

The VIN: WDB 210 065, I believe that makes it a 112 engine?
