ok, this has happened a couple of times in the last month (in the hot weather - ambient temp over 23C) and goes something like this.....

From cold, we start the car and it is fine, firing first time every time, within a second or two.

Take it out for a twenty/thirty mile run then leave it for approximately five minutes and it won't restart.

Leave it for another five minutes and it starts fine or leave it for any less time (ie a minute or two filling with fuel) it will restart perfectly

All fluids checked, no overheating and the car is running smoothly

Bizarrely and obviously unconnected the two times it has happened have been outside post offices :)

Any suggestions?

Crank Position Sensor ?

As above.

Does sound like the common CPS fault. It's an inductive (?) sensor that probably goes out of tolerence/fails once hot. Seems very common if you have a quick search on the forum :)

Obviously get the fault codes checked out first if you're not confident before splashing out on a new one ;)

Cheers for the input....

That was one of my guesses

Fault codes - yep, I already had that planned, next time we drive past the dealership

Iirc doesnt alway produce a code, have a read on the yank sites.

My SLK recently had starting / stopping whilst driving problems, turned out to be the CPS. I think the fault code was p0335 from memory, regards Damian. :)

CPS was my first thought although once started it runs like a dream. No loss of performance etc although I thougth I felt a slight 'flutter' the other day at fairly high revs (shall we say being driven 'enthusiastically' :)) when the temp was at around 26C - we've ordered a new CPS as they are cheap enough to swap out/eliminate from our enquiries.

will still get the fault codes checked next time we pass the dealer
