Car
2005 W215 CL500.
For a long time now I have had problems with ESP and ABS. Sometimes I think I have fixed it but NO the problems persist.

1 The first thing is the ABS operates ALL the time.

2 With the ESP on as normal the car surges back and forth, like a driver with her foot constantly on and off the throttle. If I turn the ESP off, this cures it.

Today I disconnected the Turn Rate Sensor (0 265 005 230) under the back seat. Obviously the ABS and BAS warnings lit up, but, the ABS is no longer acting all the time.

I am not sure if this is the problem ( the sensor) or it is merely removing the symptoms. But I can brake without the ABS acting (bliss), nor the car surging.

Obviously the ABS no longer operates when you might want it (thank goodness its dry weather)...but I'm at my wits end. I learnt to drive without these aids so its no biggy.

What does the panel think.

Thanks.

No idea Ollie, it's a public holiday here (Belfast) yesterday and today.

Is esp similar to asr ? My asr kicks in and out while i drive over 50mph without lighting the warning lamp unless i go over 80mph. the reason for it is the left tyre is worn more than the right. It thinks the wheel is spinning and cuts the drive. Is this anything like u have ? Second. . . i had a transit . when accelerating on the motorway if i braked the abs felt like it was kicking in . Turned out the cheap discs and pads were the problem. I fitted oem's and the fault stopped. Any use ??

No, Danny, all tyres and brakes are new.

Just had a thought.

I am sure its a wheel speed issue. Are all your tyres the correct size?

Ollie, all tyres are new, same size, same make. Now, the cruise control works normally (with and without the sensor being disconnected) and the parameter steering works as it should.

I had a broken abs ring (right rear) which was fixed. That wheel sensor was also replaced.

Would the cc work as expected if one of the wheel sensors was faulty?

Rust. The ring splits. Mine was welded back together.

The car then goes into limp home and you lose ABS,ESP,BAS and the parameter steering.

It is additional power assistance which makes the car very light to steer at slow speed. I once got an A class as a courtesy car, and couldn't wait to get back to my big heavy diesel to ease the strain on my arms.

DO check the wiring for dodgy connections and earthing.

I've had several intermittent faults on BAS/ESP/ADS which I thought I had cured but has returned since it was serviced (go figure). I suspect raising the car extended the dampers and strained some wiring. I have resorted to thumping the black boxes under the bonnet in approved NASA "assist with lunar boot" fashion, crude but it seems to work.

Intermittent faults are a complete pain because they are not there when you want to find them. Murphy's Law applies. Current ones are "Display Defective" and "ADS Fault", the latter drops her into some very hard-sus mode, more-so than the normal sports mode.

There was a drop of water inside one of the ECU plug/socket, the three earth points under the bonnet had some corrosion (not rust). Water + different metals + electricity = corrosion. I had thought and hoped that I had found and fixed it, but it has returned. We have at least eliminated reluctor problems.

One thing I have observed is that MB used lead-free solder on the plugs and sockets, not crimped as more common. This is horrible stuff and it has a limited life, it oxidises and dry-joints at the least excuse, a 210 is around the right age for it. I discovered this when the fog lamp plug fell off, spent a silly half hour upside down like a bat with a high temperature TCP#8 iron and some tin-lead, sorted that.

A little update on that in the hope it may help someone else.

The ADS would reset on a re-start but would fault again when we hit a suitable bump. Much muttering. It would default into something harder than sports mode, but then ADS was not performing its variable bounce trickery like what is does in sports or comfort modes.

So the other night I whipped the top off the ECU black box beneath the bonnet and pulled the ADS unit. Yes it had hopped loose, not firmly clicked-in.

Quick blast of contact cleaner and air duster. And a firm shove. So far the fault has not returned. Ok, it's electronics, but if you can pull boards in and out of your computer, you can do this. Fondle the earthy bits of your car beforehand so you don't get static.
This is the second time the intermittent fault has been traced back to this black box. So if it returns again I shall have to look to restraining the components in a more secure manner.

Took the car to an respected Indie. STAR said sensor (the one I'd disconnected) swapped the part for a known good one...faults remained. So, I've arranged to leave it with him. He suspects ABS pump and will swap with a known good one.

It may be a faulty brake light switch and/or a faulty abs sensor. You need to get the codes read 1st though..
