Hi, Braked at a roundabout and heard the big bang, stopped and looked behind to find front nearside spring in three pieces on the road.
Managed to drive home 20 miles albeit at slow speed.
Can anyone give advice on repair and good after market part supplier,i have not had the chance to remove wheel yet due to poor weather, jacked car up to take weight off damper.

The springs are not expensive from Mercedes. My indie put them (replace in pairs) in for £40.

i bet that must if been a bit of a nightmare.

Is this a common thing on W210's? and are there any tell tell signs so to get them changed over.

Sorry to intrude on your thread

It's common enough. Though usually they break about 3 inches or so from the bottom and you don't notice anything is wrong.

A similar thing has just happened to me, but the I can only describe it as a 'cup that holds the top of the road spring in place' has bent upwards and allowed the road spring to come away. I was fortunate as I was in a car park when this happened, but on Sunday evening I reached speeds of 70++ on the motorway. I can't imagine the carnage it could have caused.:eek:

I have been told that it is a common thing for the area around this part to rust. I have been told that it will need welding. I have also been told that it is a body shop repair. I have been quoted £500 to put it right.

I would put a photo on this thread, but I don't know how.

My car is looking really sad at the moment and has not been helped by jealous gloating neighbours who take great delight in poking fun at the problem after me singing the praises of the car.:mad:

Spring perch failure is also too common. £500 is also far too dear to fix it.

Do you know of anyone who could do this repair for me. I would have the car delivered to them. I'm puzzled as to what to do right now.

One of the car magazines has a campaign on at the moment to get all these type faults to be made public by the manufacturers. They say just having recalls public is not enough. In the USA all the technical bulletins are made public - such as premature sudden spring failures, valeo radiator faults etc etc. Maybe if a few Merc owners wrote into them...

Make sure you buy specific to your car. There are diffrence in specs based on wieght of car as well what equipment it carry. If you buy wrong one your car will be sitting to low and there is big chance you will damage something else (like my frined did - he samshed enrite front end on parking lot against curb).

If you do the job for springs its worth getting new shims and pads on top of springs as well. All that will make your car sits on right level.

Thanks for interest Black C55 although not in your region,up north in Cumbria

Thanks for info, removed wheel yesterday to have a look, support perch in place but welded side fillets hanging by a thread of rusted metal,my spring appears to have had a old break which was inside cup/perch,i can tell by the heavy rust, final break in spring lower down around 4th coil which caused spring to exit suspension and ended up on road where i retrieved.

If anyone has a pic to show what to looks for or where one can see the potential break, then maybe i can go have a look at my springs.... should there be a reason to just get em changed over rather than waiting for them to go!!!!

This is quite scary to be honest what you on the motor way and it gives way.. is there room for the steering of manovering to the hard shoulder..

When the spring perch went on my car, I got both springs replaced at the same time as both had snapped!

So 2x genuine springs for the E55 and 1x spring perch + getting the welding done etc cost me £300 from my local garage.

It's really not a good design, there have been many W210 spring perches failing according to the garage.

Spring Perch could be done under warranty

I am being led to believe that because my car is under 10 years old, my car may be able to be repaired under Mercedes recall. :dk: Apparently Mercedes dealerships have been supplied with repair kits for this on going problem. Does anyone know anything about this. If not I will keep you posted as to my findings. I have been told to phone Mercedes on Monday.
