I went to get new front tyres fitted to my 300td but one of the wheel studs has snapped off and the tyre fitters said they have had quite a few lately. The wheels are standard alloy as per ellegance spec, has any body got advice what is the best way to remove the stud.

Might be worthwhile to just get some new Discs/Pads/Bolts.

Just an idea.....

Except the bolts pass through the disks and screw into the hubs!;)

Didn't realize that, sorry.

Andrew

Why are you asking for a solution ?????????????????????

The tyre fitters have already told you they had quite a few like this recently.

They will therefore know by now what the solution is.

or

or

or

or, are they telling a "porky" ?

snappedwheel stud

Thanks for all your info, i contacted a MB main dealer who quoted about 5 million pounds so ive booked it into local village garage who it said no problem and would about 1 hours labour.
I will let every know what the out come is
Thanks again to all your replies

If the tyre fitters have snapped it , no doubt with an air gun , surely it is their responsibility to sort it out ....

What if they'd scratched the car , would they just say to you 'Oh, you'll need to get that painted mate ...'

They damaged it, let them sort it ...

Totally agree with Howard;)

What happens if it the previous person who did wheel up excessivly tight damaging the bolt? It may not be the fitters fault. Just the previous monkey not tightening the wheel properly.

Don't think it's necessarilly fair to blame the fitters.

I have heard of this before on a w210. My car was delayed going to an independant who had a w210 with wheel bolts sheared on all four wheels.

wheel bolts on MB`s do tend to rust on, so cant blame fitters for that.

Did they try to loosen the bolts with a bar first or just whack the air gun straight on ? ;)

iirc the shape of the bolts has been changed to stop this happening. They had a neck in the shaft which was a weak spot.

The extended shank bolts were discontinued a long time ago..
We're selling quite a lot of our RAD bolts recently - Strength class 10.9 and wheelgun proof to 400Nm.. Also the Dacromet500 coating is 12 times as corrosion resistant as the zinc plated MB bolts. 240hrs in salt spray test vs 20hrs..

Is it worth taking our wheel bolts off and adding copper grease (one at a time of course :o )

Wheel Nuts

Just picked up my car from local garage, fantastic! To drill out the broken bolt and replace all 20 bolts £110.00. It pays to talk to your friendly local garage and not the main dealers.

The new bolts are shorter but who cares they wont snap.

If bolts are going to snap then a bar is the worst way to approach them. Air guns loosen using shock, not torque, so they would tend to not snap a stuck bolt in a situation where a bar would snap them

The newer bolts are shorter and the longer ones are no longer available. Wonder why????
