W211 320cdi Estate rear Suspension Help (self leveling?)

Back from our recent trip to the Geneva Show we stayed with mum & dad and dad used hos car to ferry us about.

I've not sat in the back for a long time but noticed it was thuding down any potholes.

Its a 2003 Model owned since new E320Cdi Estate with the self leveling suspension.

Any idea what could be wrong? does it need air in them?? or has something likely to have gone?

I had the same thought last night when I travelled in the back of our ML for the first time!!

The back of a car is never as comfortable as the front in my opinion, maybe because there's less weight at the back and so is unable damp the thuds as well as the front. Whether that's right I'm not sure.
