w211 4 matic coming soon.

It's a well known fact that I am a bit 'slow', but the W211 as been available in 4Matic for a number of years!!

I believe this news item might apply to the new 320CDI and NOT the RHD version??

Yes I think so too, shame the pic doesn't show the steering column.

what exactly does it do again? obviously i know the basics but are there any advanced features?

I have read a review by an owner of an E500 4Matic and he is really impressed with its 4 wheel drive capabilities. This person always used to have Audi's but the latest Mercedes system evidently is a whole new generation above this.

He posted a video of driving around a snow bound car park doing figure of eights and the car was rock solid and simply would NOT let go. All the traction control features were switched on, but that is what you pay for.

I am just annoyed we cannot have this option over here (or any other country that drives on the correct side of the road)

John

John,

I do hope that the several 100s of posts which I have posted, not forgetting the very intelligent discussion we had over pm, have not led you to underline 4 wheel drive due to a supposed stupidity on my part? I am quite aware of its primary function, and even if not i could happily of had a correct guess, and was merely wondering if there was anything ground-breaking - as we are used to seeing from mb - within the system. :D

thanks,

Rich the moronic?

Hi Rich :o :o
A thousand apologies if you thought.... that I thought that you were moronic??

Far from it, I must confess that I have been out for a little ride today and am now suffering, so I must confess to forgetting that you were (or are) a very knowledgeable Merc man

Info about 4Matic

Hopefully this might answer any questions.

It's also in a form of English :D

I'm not sure how unusual that is - I remember seeing a Porsche 911 Carrera4 on TV, and they couldn't make it skid on a skid pan with all the electronics enabled.

I understand where your coming from and please do not think I am putting the 4Matic on a pedestal and saying it is the ultimate four wheel drive vehicle.

The owner was impressed with the car and kindly sent me a video clip of these figure of eights. No stunt prepared by a TV program, simply an owner letting rip in an empty car park.

Last year my wife dropped our daughter off at school and was surprised to see a Discovery sliding on a very large area of ice whilst simply turning round. The only reason for the surprise was because our normal E-class turned on the same ice at a similar speed and merely had the electronic wizardary cut in. We can all give reasons why one vehicle slid and another did not, but it is re-assuring for me as a worrying husband and reassuring for my wife as a driver that the E-class coped in the fashion it did.

Of course it is a two wheel drive vehicle and of course it will embarrass a heavy right foot, but the latest technology is a tremendous improvement over what much older vehicles have.

If I lived in an area where there was a risk of snow or ice, I would without hesitation buy the 4Matic if only it were available.

My apologies - i thought my reply came accross more tongue in cheek than it obviously did, judging by the anon negative rep i received, but clearly not. My fault, it was a busy day. perhaps I should of used more smiley faces at the end!!!!

John - there was no offense taken what so ever - i was merely trying to make light of you underlining a few words which were somewhat stating the obvious! lol - all good fun...

downside :( - back down a few rep points. that next green box is getting even further away  ;) :) cheers anon!

Not AGAIN!!

This is the second time someone has been awarded a 'black blobby' on a thread that I have been involved in?? I hate it when folks leave anonymous dollops. They really should NOT be allowed. By all means leave them, but surely we are all adults??? Grown ups 'should' take responsibility for their actions and if they cannot, then they should not do it.

I assure you it wasn't me, and I am now even more :o embarrassed.

Good luck with your quest.

John

lol - i'll get over it :) Actually quite enjoying my negative point bad boy rep! ;)

Getting back to the thread (of sophisticated 4x4 electronics etc.) I had an amazing time on a 'sheet ice' skidpan at MIRA in a Porsche Cayenne. Foot flat to the floor on simulated ice and the car just very gently and smoothly pulled away. Stopping by slamming on the brakes brought about a similarly slow progressive stop.

All very controlled and smooth, and safe as long as you don't build up too much speed which takes too long to retard.

truly amazing what can be achieved by the electronic brains in the cars of today. Long may mb continue their revolutionary cars.

Impressed by porsches cayenne - no experience of a large 4x4 but all reports point to them having superb off road and handling ability. excellent engineering from the worlds best car manufacturer (shock its not mb!!! sorry)

I'm having a Cayenne as a courtesy car :D on Monday when my Boxster is being serviced. I'll let you know how I get on!!

I have had a few 4 wheel drive Audis and driven other 4WD cars and I am always impressed by 4WD systems that are tuned for road use.

However, I often find that they allow you (and by that I mean "me") to travel at speeds on ice and snow that are unhealthily fast - this fact being discovered when I need to brake quickly. If the tyres don't have the traction, no amount of electronic wizardry (ABS, ESP, BAS, SBC, ETC.) and 4WD technology can stop you quickly. Trouble with 4WD is it gives you a misplaced sense of security.

I often read that proper winter type tyres on a two wheel drive car are safer and more secure than standard tyres on a 4WD in snow and on ice.

Nevertheless, I would certainly plump for a 4-matic if one were available. :)

Still holding my breath!

Mercedes market so many different models in the UK now. Some might say too many for the technicians to cope with, but thats another story. A,B,C,E,S ,R,V,M,CLK,CL,SLK,SL plus all the AMG variants and they say its not economic to offer any 4matic models in the UK. I,m sorry but I remain to be convinced. MAYBE its because importers MBUK wont buy enough from them rather than MB being willing to make them! I read recently that over 50% of new Audi registrations in Scotland are quattro versions so there is a demand up here and if we get the winter predicted some folks down south might begin to think the same.So come on MB 90% of the engineering exists it just needs a bit of moving around. You might just sell a few more cars! Just look what the original Audi Quattro did for the Audi brand image. :) and here's a list of the countries MB doesnt want to sell 4matic cars in!
Anguilla, Antigua, Australia,
Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Bhutan, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Brunei,
Cayman Islands, Channel Island, Cooke Islands, Cocos Island, Cyprus,
Dominica,
Fiji,
Granada, Guyana,
Hong Kong
India, Indonesia, Ireland, Isle of Man,
Jamaica, Japan,
Kenya, Kiribati,
Lesotho,
Macao, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique,
Namibia, Naunu, Nepal, New Zealand, Norfolk Islands,
Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairin Island,
St.Helena, St.Kitts and Nevis, St.Lucia, St.Vincent, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Swaziland,
Tanzania, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turke and Caicos Islands,
Uganda, United Kingdom,

Good morning grober,
I think it is very easy to criticise and make generalisations, but I honestly do NOT believe Mercedes-Benz make a RHD E-class 211 4Matic......

I do not mean they do not import it to the UK, I mean they do not make it for any RHD country. Whether this is a financial decision, or a mechanical one, I am not sure, but they simply do not produce one.

Can you name a single country that has imported a right-hand drive 4Matic 211??? (that will put copious dollops of egg on face :o )

Is there a market for this feature?? I have no idea, but we are not the only country in the world that drives on the correct side.

Mercedes-Benz and a number of other foreign car manufacturers have put themselves out to cater for our needs and for that, I for one am grateful. Look at older British Leyland vehicles and you will see that the windscreen wipers are fitted to favour the LHD market, even though it is a BRITISH car!!! The top right hand corner of the screen is not covered by the wiper sweep.

At least some foreign manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz took this into consideration!!!

Regards,
John
