W211 Ambient Light

I managed to buy a pair (front & rear) ambient lights domes for a few bucks, but I was wondering is this just plug and use or do I need somekind of module to get this thing working? Because the car wasn't equipped with this option, it's just a 'classic' w211

I think the ambient lighting will have to be coded into the car so there will be an option to adjust the brightness of the lights . There wont be any need for extra control units however , the front light is the over head control unit .
