W211 Battery Drain "Consumer Units" etc.

Faulty isolation relay has been reported couple of times.

It could be due to diferences between AGM/liquid acid battery system... I just read US forum and there one member was struggling with similar problem see post #10: w211 E320 2003 main battery question - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

Good catch on that one mersum1es.

I didn't use an MB battery - but did extensive research which yielded the following results:

OEM for the Aux Battery was Fiamm. Original Fiamm Part No: A 211 541 00 01

I finally found a compatible battery by Unibat.

Unibat Batteries for Motorcycles, Jet-skis, Quads, Utility Vehicles

The Part Ref. No on the battery I used is: CBTX14-BS

This is taken form their website:

CBTX BATTERIES
These batteries were the first with AGM technology. Their main features are:

  • Greater starting-up power.
  • More discharging cycles compared with conventional batteries.
  • You can angle the battery in any direction without the risk of acid leakage.
  • They are available for most applications.
So the battery I used was an AGM with 12v 12ah equivalent spec.

Thanks for taking the time to investigate - much appreciated.

Like I said - really really frustrating!!! :dk:

Parasitic power drain.

I have a similar problem. One morning after car left for just 1 week, completely dead. AA man diagnosed an 10 mA draw and said it should only be 3 or less with 'nothing' on.

I took it to the stealers and after £211 told me I had two power drains.
1. Was from the rear boot release handle. this has had a problem sticking for a while and the catch to open it is not pushed back, this will draw 2 mA's.
2. BIG Problem. The central command unit has some "condensation damage" preventing it from shutting down and some contacts were corroded.

Repair quote for both £3250. I have not had the work done :wallbash:

Suggestion from the stealers were to get a second hand command unit, Pull fuse 3 from the boot when not in use (command fuse) or buy a solar panel.

Not great choices.... :(

I can empathise with your frustration.

But not sure if I'm reading your post properly.

Problem 1 was related to the boot release. Am I correct that you mean the pull switch mounted in the driver's door panel? Is it the switch that is not releasing or is it the lighting in the boot not being switched off? Worst case sounds like a simple switch replacement to me.

Problem 2 Central Command Unit - condensation / corroded contacts? Can't understand what they mean - did they explain in detail?

I had the same problem on a W211 E500. When I used it twice a week this message came up every time I drove it - but went away after 5 minutes or so, sooner if it was warmer. When I started to use it every day the problem went away and never came back. This may not be practical for you but more regular use cured it for me - it was something my Merc dealer at he time said was relatively common on early W211s - mine was a 2002.

There is an software update available for BCM, and also updated hardware (according recent news).

1stMercedesE240: 10mA is nothing, the limit is somewhere 50-60mA what I've heard/read/experienced. Is there a decade offset in readings your AA man told (100mA is slightöy too much, still it shouldn't drain battery very fast)? If comand is on allthe time, that will certainly do that. That's quite common reason so I would try do more search if no similar victims are found in this forum.

Hi,

Did the roof unit issue ever get resolved?

I had a battery drain issue around 5 months ago where the battery would go flat after a day or two with no prior issues. The car had two new batteries so they weren't the cause. I pulled various fuses but the issue remained. Whilst the car was in the garage having some work done, the battery remained flat until it was ready to come home at which point it was charged and there was no return of the problem until two weeks ago.

Although it 'fixed itself' last time, this time round I was prepared with my ammeter and have attempted a more logical approach to isolating the problem as leaving it flat for a few days hasn't worked. When leaving the car now I switch off the COMAND unit and the Auto AC heater unit. The ammeter has been connected on the 10A setting and there is a current draw of 0.05 which is 50mA by my calculation and isn't particularly horrendous I don't think. When pulling fuses this drops to 30mA after removing the roof unit fuse. Should this draw be present in sleep mode? If not, what's the fix? Should a 50mA draw be draining the battery in just a couple of days?

Thanks

Still Frustrated

As I've reported in previous posts I've been having the rogue drain "Electrical Consumers Switched Off" issue almost since I bought the car.

To date I still haven't found a solution although I have tried quite a few things.

Ironic - I actually connected the battery up to a trickle charger this afternoon to allow it charge over night as I got the "ECSO" error two or three times this week.

It's been too cold wet and horrible of late to get the meter out to check for draws again - might have a go at it tomorrow if I get a chance.

Still looking for a solution.:dk:

I have a 2003 E500 w211 as well and I am experiencing the same issue, Have you tried replacing the "high current relay?" Mercedes here in the united states told its part number 002-542-4719.

My issue started with I changed the AUX battery under the hood/bonnet and since then my car has been completely dead just by being parked overnight.

Hi whoezdaboss and welcome.

The last post on this thread is one year old so you might not get a reply from the OP.

Best start a new thread in the appropriate section and invite responses from everyone?

Hi,

I still haven't got to the bottom of the problem. Over the winter I would get the "Consumers Switched Off" message every three to four weeks. However I have noticed that more recently the time gap between seeing the message has been getting shorter and shorter. Just today the car was fine this morning, drove to work no problem, came home - no problem and then went out to do some shopping so drove to the store - no issues. When I came out of the supermarket turned the key and hey ho - the blasted message is back again so I put in on trickle charge overnight.

Given that the time between getting the message was getting shorter I concluded, rightly or wrongly that either the battery was going bad or that it wasn't being properly charged. Putting a meter across the battery poles has always given a reading of 12.3 to 12.5 volts. Starting the car and revving slightly this has risen to 13.5 but I have noticed some fluctuation of late so late last week I ordered a new regulator pack for the alternator on the basis that it was a whole lot cheaper to replace than the battery.

The regulator should arrive in the next day or two and I'll hopefully get it fitted over the weekend. Will let you know how I get on.

The search goes on - boy is this a monstrous pain in the rear end???:mad::confused:

Hi, I am having a similar problem with a 2007 E220 CDI, The facelift model without the aux battery. if the car is parked up for a few days the battery will drain completely, then I have to open boot with actual blade key, jump battery and it starts. I tend now to just remove the negative battery and it will sit there for weeks and start no problem when battery reconnected. I must go investigating with the multimeter to see if I can determine which circuit is giving the draw. I suspected Comand NTG25.5 which I retrofitted but tried the original Audio 20 and still the problem persists. I will start with pulling fuse 9 to see if this leads to anything

And still the problem persists

Yup,

Still haven't managed to get to the bottom of this issue.

With the advent of the colder weather I'm getting the "Electrical Consumers switched off" every 5 to 7 days. It disappears after a few miles so I continue on my merry way and then trickle charge the battery overnight.

Oh how I hate intermittent problems!:crazy::crazy:

Just locked myself in the car and waited 30 seconds then moved my arm and alarm went off so I am guessing mine has different sort of sensors

Must be then.
