To cut a long story short some unusual resonances and a gear lever that was moving more than it had previously led me to believe I might had had a damaged engine mount.

The local garage stuck in on a ramp and we had a peer and right enough the passenger side mount appeared to have collapsed.

They put a new one on yesterday and it turned out the old one had totally sheared (?!).

They left the driver side one alone even though the mech spotted a crack. They told me they see a lot of 211's with broken engine mounts and that this one had plenty of life left. The gearbox mount was fine.

All this as news to me. I've never broken an engine mount before and I've never heard it a weak point on 211's.

It's a cheap fix so I'll listen out for any odd noises from the other side

Anyone else had an issue with engine mount?

I had one go on mine, when I was in D at stop I kept hearing a knocking:dk: it sounded like something rattling about in the crossmember, that turned out to be engine mount, so I had both replaced, mine are the oil filled one's.

Those two statements don't add up.
Do you mean the rubber mount had collapsed or the cast arm had broken?

The hydraulic/rubber mounts do collapse due to the weight and torque and if the arm breaks it will be because the mounting has already collapsed so more shock is being transmitted.

I had the passenger side mount go on mine, we were replacing the centre bearing on the propshaft (for a third time!) when I noticed witness marks on the passenger side exhaust which was making contact with the floor between the primary and secondary cats location. I had both engine mounts and gearbox mounts changed by Jack at PCS and since then no more propshaft bearing problems!
Mine had not collapsed and in fact inspection in situ gave no indication of a problem, but if you put the car in drive, left foot brake hard and raise rpm to 1500 rpm the engine would lift almost 2 inches on the passenger side. Only once the mount was removed was it obvious that it was not only worn but completely knackered.

Couldn't really tell - from underneath it just looked as if the whole unit was two inches shorter than the one on the right.

When I saw in the workshop floor there was the rubber part of the mount an a separate metal plate - looked liked they'd separated.

It's hard for me to reconcile as I never saw what it should have lokked like.

Anyway, it was sh*gged. :-)

Ouch. Glad I got mine done. Wished they'd done the other one at the same time but they didn't call. When I dropped in they'd nearly finished the job and it was too late.

It's not just 211's that suffer. They all do.
