Hi all,

I need a little advice please - I'm retrofitting folding mirrors to my 2006 E320CDI (right hand drive).

I've replaced the driver side frame with a folding one.
I've also replaced the Mirror adjustment switch.

The driver's side mirror now adjusts fine (up, down, left, right), and folds when I press the "fold" button. I did not need to change the driver's door control unit.

The passenger side is posing an issue. The original controller was a A2118701326 unit (no support for folding).

I have changed the door controller to an A2118701985 unit but when it's all connected back up, I can no longer move/adjust the original (non-folding) mirror or the passenger window. I then connected a folding mirror frame, but still no have movement from either the window or the mirror.

I think I can rule out cabling breaks or shorts because when I put the original controller back in, both window and mirror can be adjusted from the driver side again.

Fair enough, I thought, it's a dodgy door controller. I sourced another, A2118701126, and have got exactly the same results.

Has anyone seen this before?
Are both new door controllers broken?
Do they need to be STAR configured to work in any new car they are put into?
Are the pin-outs different between the various door controllers?

Or am I impatient and it's simply that the new controllers need happy thoughts and a few minutes to warm up with the engine on, before they start to work?

(And yes, the engine is off while I disonnnect/reconnect all the plugs in the door controllers, but I have the engine running when testing the results...)

Thanks for any help...
Eddie.

The car will have to go on to STAR and have the CAN reconfigured . The car dont know that it has folding mirrors therefore when the signal is sent via CAN to the passenger door to fold the mirror the car will not know what this means . The drivers will work because the switch is connected stright to it and dose not need to use CAN .

Fair play!

Many thanks Shorty, I thought it was a bit odd that both new controllers would be iffy, and your explanation makes perfect sense...

I don't fancy paying a dealer hourly rates to train someone how to use STAR using my car - do you know any good independent with STAR in Dublin or north-east area, or is it something you do yourself? Sorry for the public interrogation - I can't PM yet...

Thanks again,
Eddie

But...

Hi again Shorty,

on thinking further - I can understand why CAN needs to be reconfigured for the mirror folding function, but surely the window (up/down) and the mirror adjustment (up, down, left, right) should work regardless of CAN?

Cheers,
Eddie.

Sorry I didnt see the part about the windows not working , although I still reckon that the problem is version coding in the CAN bus . Im not aware of any one in the North east having STAR excpt main dealers and where I work , and I would gladly help you out if the boss would alow me take home the dignosics , however he wont allow this .

Thanks again Shorty - do I read correct that you have STAR in your workplace?
If so - and I'm really trying not to be too forward - but would it be possible for me to call round? Given that it is a work environment, some form of fee would not be out of the question...

Please PM if this is feasible.

Thanks,
Eddie.

Hey Eddie , I tryed to PM you , you must not have over 30 posts yet to allow you recieve and send PMs .

Thanks Shorty - I thought I'd be able to receive PMs but obviously not yet...

I'll try and get this PM business sorted over the weekend and then we'll see what can be done about STAR.

Thanks again,
Eddie.
