The faclift gives 20hp more - how is this achived? Is it a new/modified engine or a better management system or what?

And it does not take a genius to work out why I am asking...... :D  Guess anything I did would kill the warranty though!

Don't do it - you'll have as much power as my E270 then I'll feel inadequate.

I think the E220 Diesels have always had more power than the C220 Diesels also - Just somethin I've noticed ;)

I'm not sure but I think it's due to a better exhaust layout in the E compared to the C.

There have been many versions of the 220 CDI diesel engine.

Back in 1998 it was brought in to replace the 250 turbodiesel engine and came with 122bhp in the W202 , moving to the W210 and w203 it then jumped to 143 and EU3 where it stayed for a while. When the W211 came out the engine in that was 150bhp and EU4. Recently to keep up with the 2.0 bmw diesel engine its been boosted accordingly and is now sitting at 170bhp appearing in the W204 and W211.

Roughly and that was all from memory so please feel free to correct it.

Does anyone know how thay achieved that? Would it be possible to take a pre-facelift 220CDi and change something to output 170bhp?

Crazy question I know!

22.2l? I'd hope so :D:D:D:D

Most of the chiptuning companies promise outputs in that region.

There are quite a few differences...

The 150hp engine has fuel injection equipment from Bosch, 170hp is from Delphi. (So rail, injectors, pump and ECU are different)

Then, the turbo is new, with 815 deg operating capability instead of 780deg. The intercooler is taken from the V6 Diesels, so is not the same. The bearings have been uprated to allow 160bar peak pressure instead of 150bar. The cooling system is new and the piston bowls have been optimised for the new injectors.

Not too many differences really...

Matt

So the chip tuners have it right then just squirting in more fuel..?
