I took off the plastic engine cover that goes over the oil filler cap and noticed that there was loads of old crappy oil around the base of filler cap. It looks like its coming from the gasket which I think is the cam cover?

Any ideas?
There is no oil on my garage floor but its obviously been leaking for a long time as there was loads of oil around the base of the filler cap

Very common place to have leaks on the cam cover. Part is sealed by a sealant only which often leaks.

When I bought mine, there were signs of oil misting from there too - was a cheap fix, even at MB.

I had mine done at MBS last service. The longest job is cleaning off the old gasket material.

Ive just remembered seeing the black sealant. I looks like someone has tried to bodge it

Main cam rocker covers have a gasket and sealant, there is also the upper smaller covers at the rear of the block that also leak, but just require sealant.

its the breather part on top of the cam cover, it is sealed on with sealant

needs removing, cleaned and then resealed.

ive done one side on mine and the other is now leaking a little.

Done both of mine recently. Bought new gaskets from Mercedes and had some liquid sealant left over from my Honda Civic days (grey in colour). Mercedes sealant is black in colour.

I used brake cleaner to clean my valve covers, worked wonders.

It's been a few months now... No leaks so far.

Check youtube, there's several vids showing the problem and the whole process to fix.
