W211 E55 LPG Conversion

My A8 4.2

Do you ever suffer coking up on it?

I understand the FSI is prone to it... or is that if you drive it like a tart and only do stop/start/cold/town driving (which is what I would expect)?

I think my mechanic did back to back runs at the dyno day I organised last year. Will double check with him and see if he has the graphs. I'm not 100% of the spec of my system but I do know that it's an LPGTech setup and is pretty much the same as his on the same engine. Only difference is bodystyle (his is a estate, mine is a saloon) and gearbox (manual in his, tiptronic in mine). He's done quite a few different installs from 4 pots to V8 engines and is clued up on mapping the lpg ecu to match the cars ecu. Having an AFR gauge helps when setting up too.

No mate mine is the pre-FSI engine. FSI came in 2006 and was crap. My S8 V10 suffered slightly from coking though not as bad as my RS4 V8.

The rolling road printout above is from a VR4 owners club member's car. It was done last year. Not exactly conclusive evidence as I'm not 100% sure on how much mapping had been done on both petrol and gas but it's a start.

Looks good. I wonder how they manage to pump all the extra LPG into the cylinder to compensate for the energy content deficit? I guess at least on turbo cars the boost can be turned up to match the fuelling.

I'm not that clued up to the technical side of things but I know that the fuelling tables can be altered with loads of different variatioms and adjustments. I've been told that you get less knock with lpg so you can run higher boost. Not sure how all this compares to a NA engine or a supercharged one mind but I guess I'll find that out if I switch to an E55 next year.

I have my E55 converted to LPG, it runs very well, but in spite of having two vapourisers, if I really go for it, it does kick back to petrol. I suspect the limitation is flow rate further back, but I'm not an engineer so thats guessing.

That said, I can go plenty fast enough for day to day driving on LPG. I can't recall the ECU make, but it has been problem free for over 30,000 miles now.

I agree that the quality of the key components is one key issue and the quality of the install the other. If they are right, you should have a problem free system.

I have run 3 cars with big turbos on LPG, two Saabs, one highly tuned and one V6 bi-turbo Audi without any issues. In the past we started with an old Range rover and we currently have a V6 golf, ML430, E55 and my Sabb 9000 all running gas.

The 9000 is so well setup it will pull to the redline on Gas and there really is no detectable loss of performance, so I think finding someone who really knows what they are doing for install and setup is what nails it. A lot of installers load a standard ECU map for whatever the make/model of car is and that's your lot because they don't know how to tune fuelling irrespective of whether it's gas or petrol.

If you have a good installer/tuner lined up, I would definitely go for it much as it may be frowned upon.

Good luck!

I've been running LPG on several cars without any issues at all.
But I've always used PRINIS systems and they are rock solid.

currently:
BMW 130i E81 2010

past:
Mitsubishi Ralliart 2012 (tuned to 355bhp)
BMW E46 M3 SMG
Lexus LS300
Tahoe 5.7
Yukon 6.0

if you do it get a prins system and you will be able to run it without any issues at all.
But as said...the installer will make the difference!

Oh and I forgot.
My prins dealer drove with C and E 6.2 engined AMG's.
Also know other ppl with C63 and ML63 lpg equipped cars.
Also BMW V10 M5's.

Good to hear from some fellow lpg users. A C63 saloon with lpg must be amazing. All that performance and soundtrack with cheaper running costs. That's the dream!
