Hi everyone! I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I am facing a strange problem! Recently I bought a 2002 MB E-Class Avantgarde (W211) E220 CDi Sedan 110KW with 229000 km (approx. 142300 miles) on clock. The previous owner (an old guy in his 70s) did mentioned that the Radio as well as the cassette/CD player is not working. I thought it's not a big deal and would get it fixed but now (after every possible effort on my part) I am now getting tired of driving this nice old car without any music.

Last month, I took the car to a local garage and got a manual check-up of all fuses, load test, voltage, battery, etc. Everything seems to be fine except the weak system battery (11.0V) and I guess the Radio itself, which he said might be faulty and needs to be replaced. The auxiliary battery was ok with 12.5 voltage.

Earlier this month, I bought this replacement Radio with part no. A211 820 08 79 (Model. CK1211). The previous one was also the same, but with this Serial No. AL 1211 2 04 24576 (looks like it was replaced too). Before fitting the Radio, my battery started showing signs of complete weakness with shutdown of consumer devices and Red battery message - (Visit workshop) so I also replaced my old battery with this one: Yuasa YBX5019 Capacity 20hr (Ah): 100 with CCA EN1 (Amps): 900.

After installing the Battery and the Radio, one thing did changed! Now in the Radio display and Instrument Cluster I see this straight line with a dashed horizontal line. ------ . (As shown in the attached photos). :dk:

But still after pressing the silver "open/eject" button I am unable to open the cassette/CD player (previously all the functions on the centre console switch panel switch block were/are working normally "except the cassette/CD opener" or "silver eject button").

Members, I need your kind help to sort out this problem. Does it need any programming/software/firmware update or any other part replacement? Can it be that the cassette/CD player isn't talking to the processor? I am on a tight budget, so please don't scare the sh*t out of me by saying I may need to spend a fortune, €£€£€£€, just because I bought this Mersu.

Also, if anybody has faced exact same issue kindly share your experience and help me solve this problem, so I can find the root cause.

HELLO...I wanna hear some fking music! :wallbash:

To me, the radio looks like it's waiting for you to enter the security code, but I'm not sure if MB use a 6 digit code or not. Try asking the chaps at comand online if they don't pick up on your forum posting.

Thanks, GordonTarling, for your quick reply. How and where do I enter the Security Code when this thing is not working? I already tried many times to press the buttons on the Radio (even with different combinations), but this stubborn thing is not showing any life. Also, I have no idea why the CD changer (IF there is one hidden behind the centre console switch panel?) is not opening when I press the button.

Anybody else out there who may know the root cause?

I had the audio 20 with six CD changer fitted to a 2003 211 and the changer wouldn't respond to the 'open me' button because the fibre-optic gateway that connects all the audio in a loop (possibly to the ignition? :dk:) was broken.

Thanks Druk for your input! When I bought the replacement Radio, I was told the same that there is no code required. Yes, I did checked the Fiber Optic cable and it doesn't look broken. So, if you are not wrong, this narrows down the problem to unit programming to the Comand system using the Star Diagnostics machine, right? :bannana:

Okay, is there is anything else I may need to know?

The fibre optic cable wasn't broken in mine either. It was an internal FO fault that caused the problem. Fixed by inserting a bridge across the CD unit which, of course, caused it to no longer work. Just saying...

If any one else want to share their experience about the problem related to the above "Audio APS 20 with cassette tape slot", please reply. Thanks!
