W212 - anyone with dashcam installed?

Many Thanks i-CONICA for the detailed pics, it makes more sense now, I'll get a camera ordered and see how I go :)

Considering the Nextbase Duo camera, looks like its a front camera with also a rear facing zoom lens.

I've just ordered 2 x Next Base 402G Professional Dash Cams which should be coming tomorrow.

I'm hard wiring them into a 2016 E220 Estate, one near rear view mirror and the other looking out the tailgate. The main purpose for me is to give me some evidence if/when somebody bumps into me when it's parked on the street. Unfortunately it's already had the rear bumper clobbered twice when it was outside my flat. Nothing that won't buff out but my previous car had quite a knock on the rear bumper so I'd rather spend the money now to give myself some peace of mind.

I couldn't see anything in the manual for the Cam or the description for the hard wire kit about whether it will switch itself off if the battery gets too low. So I called Nextbase today who have assured me that the hard wire kit itself will cut power if it detects voltage is dropping to a dangerously low level. The car sometimes sits for a week without moving so it will be interesting to see if it will keep going for that time. I know it will depend a lot on how often they get triggered, so time will tell.

The Next Base duo (front and back cameras in single unit) has mixed reviews, considering just going for a good front camera rather then dual, in the event of a crash I think that should cover most scenarios for evidence..

I've just fitted the new NextBase 212, has the new powered mount so no wires to disconnect when removing it - so far all is well. I used the Halfords trade-in 20% off. This only works for click and collect and they didn't ask for any trade-in altough i had an old radio with me. It also came with free carry case and memory card for £47.99

Hi,

I'm a little bit late to the party but I have installed dashcam to my W212. With multimeter I've found switched +12 in the dome overhead (which switches itself off after around 1 min after key is taken out form the ignition) and that's what I'm using to piggy back +12. Wire is red with blue stripes if memory serves me right. Ground is obvious as it's brown.

So I've hidden 12v to USB converter above dome lights and hard-wired everything with those piggy back clips! Soi far I have had 0 problems but obviously your mileage might wary.

I have NO idea what I've connected to as I can't find any decent drawings but I'm sure some technicians here will eb quick to tell "TAKE IT DOWN NOW AS YOUR CAR MIGHT BURN!" or actually "Yeah, you alrite matey, no biggie! Yo!".

Btw. I've replaced ALL bulbs with LEDs so this will reduce load on the wires. Not that there is much draw from the dash cam...

I have some pics which I'm happy to upload and share later.

Cheers
Chris

Hey Chris did you find any permanent lives up there or just switched ?

Dash cam advice

Hi I'm a new member -login name Photographer so no prizes to what I do!
I have a four year old SLK 250 Blue Efficiency AMG Sport and thinking about fitting a dash cam. I kno0w nothing about them really but I've heard that a dual lens camera (with one facing the rear) would be OK when the roof is off but not so great when its on. Anybody have any experience of that with the SLK?

I've been looking at Ddpai M6 Plus HD 1440P WIFI Car Dash Cam GPS. which gets some excellent reviews but I've spoken to two 'specialist' dash cam suppliers and they having heard of it.

One they recommend is a Blackvue DR 650S-1 CH which is a one lens forward facing camera. It is quite small at 115mm (W) x 36mm (D).
Now I don't know if either camera (or any other for that matter) can fit behind the rear view mirror. There is a large black panel attached to the windscreen which the mirror is fixed to. I don't know the function of it but MB told me its very important and not to interfere with it.

Does anybody with an SLK have any experience of dash cams - I would be very grateful for any advice on both the positioning and the two models mentioned ( and any others if you know them)

Thanks a lot in advance.

I've took some more and highlighted it with arrows and annotations.

It's easy, there's no trim to remove, it really just tucks in behind, and you run it around.

I've pulled it out a little bit at various points to show where it goes.

Great post. Thank you

Can you post some photos please? I want to install a dashcam in my W212 and I'm not sure if to go down the route of the cigarette lighter plug in the glove compartment or to follow your advice...
