Should be either 0W40 or 5W40. If they used 30 they're doing it wrong, unless it's a different specification in the E Class but I can't see why it would be.
There was a sort of bulletin suggesting 5 instead of 0 during the life of the C63. The M156 is known to have noisy lifters on startup until they fill with oil. Using 5 means the oil is thicker when cold and helps it cling to engine components.
In short, I'd suggest using 5W40. May as well get the official Mercedes oil as it's well priced.
