Over the past few months, I've seen more and more discussions concerning the rear sub-frame. Nervously I remembered my car spent time in Newton Abbot. On Monday it duly failed the MOT with holes in the subframe. We have a 2012 E350 W212

I booked it into Mercedes, who have today approved a replacement of the subframe, which is quite impressive given the age, albeit the corrosion is less impressive. The garage I used had seen a couple of these and had no idea that MB was doing them on goodwill. My only exposure is if they a bolt shears etc during replacement. The rear brake pipes look far gone - I suspect I may end up replacing these in the process.

Keep an eye out folks

Forgive the somewhat cryptic reply but the link I posted doesn't work correctly. If you are getting rear subframe replaced it is well worth getting the rear brake lines replaced at the same time if they are showing signs of corrosion. [This will be at your expense of course, but I believe the rear subframe may have to be lowered to do the brake pipe replacement anyway] better to kill two birds with one stone if you intend keeping the car.

Having seen the state of the rear pipes I think this is pretty inevitable in any case...

Definitely do the rear brake pipes as the subframe needs dropping along with the fuel tank. When I had my rear subframe replaced (foc), brake pipes and new air spring wishbone pans I had to pay another £1400 at the dealers.

Speak to a dealer. They will not tell you that there is a recall, and may tell you that there is a charge to look at the vehicle.

In practice Mercedes are then covering the cost off changing the rear subframe.

It looks like it may need recovering to them on a transported!

Good luck!

Any recommended sprays to protect the inside of the subframe? My wheels are off so now is a good tme.
Thanks

Just bought some Jenolite waxoil spray.

I cleaned up my subframe today - used a pick to remove all the accumulated road muck and then sprayed waxoil into the cavity.
According to MB this subframe is ok. I'm no expert but I'm not so sure.
