W221 S-Class Driver's mirror not opening

Hi there. Have just had a new fault on a 2006 W221 S-Class. My door mirrors are set to automatically open when I open the door handle and close when locking the car.

Recently, I have noticed that the driver's window does not fold open when getting into the car automatically. The passenger side opens/closes independently 100% fine.

Does anyone know whether this is an electrical fault of the mirror or something mechanical?

When the mirror does not open automatically on unlocking the car, I can press the door switch to get it to open without problem. So looks like it sticks only in the automatic fold/unfold sequence. Not sure if there is a service update fix for this if it is something to do with the software/firnware.

Go into the menu and disable the auto-fold option.
Run the car a few times and then re-enable the option.
That might clear it.

I also spray WD40 onto the mirror workings occasionally. Makes for silent operation and it cant do any harm either.

did the WD40 help for you? I have the same problem on the passenger mirror. once in a while it doesn't respond to any comands, not even from the button on the door panel.

Any suggestions? Should I oil the gear ? open up the mirror and see if parts are damaged??

Also, my steering wheel doesn't go up and down. only in and out! HELP

I remember reading somewhere on the Forum that wires in the loom to the wing mirrors can break and cause intermittent operation of the folding function. I keep mine open all the time in the hope of avoiding this problem.

I like the idea of spraying with WD-40 as they are noisy when I do have to use them.

On a side note , i always disable the auto fold function at the first frost till the spring to save damage to them when they frost up

Hi everyone.....
I am still here, occasionally lurking.
I don't have enough spare time to contribute, so as my old Nan would say, if you cant do something properly, then best not do it at all.
I will get back and write the occasional post as time permits.
Its good to see most of the old names still showing up.
A bit belated I know, but all the VERY best to all forum members, friends and families and I hope that 2011 is an improvement on 2010 in all respects.
There are some really good people on this forum and it helps restore ones faith in human nature.
And lets hope we don't get any more of that nasty white stuff this year.
My 200K is not good on it.
