I've struggled to find an answer searching the web, so thought I'd ask here. With the rear seat refrigerator option I believe boot space in a W221 S-class is compromised.

My question is whether the refrigerator is able to be removed and refitted easily in order to free up space when needed, or whether it's completely permanent?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

Pretty sure it's 4 screws and unplug the power lead and it lifts out.

It's quite lump to be lifting in and out on a regular basis though.

Ok that's good to hear - I was thinking along the lines of keeping it out most of the time and installing it only when needed, so if the full capacity of the boot can be made available that's great news!

Thanks for such prompt responses, amazing forum!

Cheers,
Jeremy

I've got the exact same fridge in the back of my CL. There are two thumbwheels in the boot you undo together with a power connector. It then just slides straight out & there's a door provided which closes over the opening you now have in the boot. There's also a cover on the inside so it can't be seen whether fitted or not with the centre arm rest lowered.
When in place it intrudes into the boot by about 6 inches.

How about some more info about this fridge? I'm in the US and would love to add this to my US car somehow?

To retrofit in a MB NAm car Depending on the options installed in your car, the following steps might be the way to go:

Generic steps (not all the steps, not guaranteed to be totally correct either:dk:) for a 2012 - 2013 W221:

  • First carefully pull your rear panel in the trunk and see what you have installed behind the rear backrests. If there are no obstructions to retrofitting the Ski bag/Through holding option, you are probably good to go.
  • Replace the storage compartment & door (Take Up device) that resides in back of the stowed armrest with the one that is compatible with the Ski bag/Through Holding option
  • Replace the stiffening frame that resides in between the rear backrests and the rear panel in the trunk. This is required to be able to bolt up the Take up device (Access door and frame for Ski Bag/through holding option).
  • Replace the or modify the rear panel (resides in back of the frame that support the rear backrests, and is the furthest panel towards the front you see when you open the trunk). If you modify the panel you need to cut the holes for the through holding access door (Take up device) to the cabin and for the electrical harness.
  • Purchase the Trunk side Take up Device (Access Door), and install onto Rear Panel and bolt to the Stiffening Frame
  • Purchase the harness (if it does not come with the fridge). Install in the REAR SAM
  • Purchase the fridge (the all in one version), open the Ski bag door, inert the fridge, bolt up to the stiffening frame - through the rear panel. connect the harness to the receptacle on the rear panel.
BTW, you may need to order parts fro the UK or Germany as not al parts may be available via a NorAm vendor/dealer.

Well, it seems the steps I outlined actually are most of the steps. I would add that you will need to purchase the harness (the one that connects to the REAR SAM), screws, nits and the long fastener/bolts (the ones that secure the fridge to the stiffening frame) separately.

To remove the fridge, it is two long bolt/fasteners and unplug the unit from the plug in the rear panel- see attached pics (Thanks DB for the rear panel pic - mine is not complete yet, I will post when it is finished)
