New parts is the way to go on this, I have done a few now and all work as they should.
Getting the harness out and in is not easy but I can do this in about 3 hours now.

Thanks Zenman, so if I get the Control Panel used , and everything else new, what could you fit it for, can it be coded with any Xentry/DAS system or does it need Dev. Mode ?

Yes I can fit it, be very careful with a used unit as thats what gave me the massive problems to get it working.
I can code it and set it all up as I have Xentry/ das.

OK, also, as it is a Viano, it has the control in the roof of the rear - does this need to be changed to a different version as well ?

I did change mine for digital rear as well, it moves the rear control to the overhead control, it all works seamless on auto as to should.
I have a digital rear overhead control here I can sell.

OK, so how much am I looking at in total if I go for a new panel, fitting included ?...

Put me a picture on photo bucket on here of your over head control.
Remember the digital front controller must have the extra small button on the right with the rear air con symbol.
Rear air con to the front over head controller has to be wired, I make the harness up for this as MB do not make it.
Can you PM me for costs.

Ok cool that in the rear will be redundant but leave it there to cover the hole.

Where would it be ?, it came with a TV installed in the centre behind the front seats, (on the roof lining) would it have gone there ?

No up next to the mirror there should be a unit with lights

Nothing up by the mirror, just the standard reading light etc...
