I'm a little embarrassed to say that my C43 is fitted with a three pointed star grille. In my defence, it was fitted to the car when I bought it...

I'd like to return the car to standard, so I'm after an OEM grille in mint condition as per the image on the left. I understand the part number is A2028800383. Thanks.

Grille inserts (the plastic bit) are dirt cheap from MB.

Thanks to everyone for their comments

You need to make sure though that you get a facelift W202 grill if you wish to revert it back to stock as the pre-facelift and facelift W202 grills did difffer. Heres a correct one:

MERCEDES C-CLASS W202 GRILLE (LATE) on eBay (end time 07-Jul-10 15:36:19 BST)

That's helpful - I didn't realise the pre-facelift and facelift grilles differ. I think I'll make an offer on one of those.

I got a quote on the grille (model A2028800383) from Mercedes. According to the parts system, they only appear to sell the grille with the surround and the cost was £118 + VAT = £138.65

Thanks for the info - that sounds like a good option.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to replace the surround as well as I don't know if the surround is an OEM part. Do you know how I can tell?

The surround will be the original one, just give it a good clean when you're swapping inserts and it should come up like new.

I ordered this part and collected it today, but this is only part 8 in the diagram below. I also had to order the chrome strips:

  • part 26 (A1408882185): £4.11 inc VAT
  • part 29 (A2028880285) x 4: £12.46 inc VAT
I was advised that the vertical chrome strip (part 26) is shared with the S Class. It is too long for the C-Class and so has to be cut to fit.

Whats wrong with the 3 point grill?

See below.

Please no flaming as at least a little respect is due for me being brave enough to post a picture of my (soon to be replaced) grille.

I think the three pointed star grilles look great on modern models but they look a bit naff on the older models where they were never a standard fit item.

i have genuine c43 grill for sale if you are intrested

Thumbs up on changing it back Robert. Will you be getting a bonnet star instead too ?

Back to original...

If anyone is contemplating the same change, I'd recommend buying a second hand grille and surround. It took me a few hours to fit the new parts as none of the 5 chrome strips supplied by Mercedes are the correct length. It took a lot of trial and error to get them all exactly the right length.

Thanks for your comments. I've got mixed views about the Avantgarde grille. I can see why people like it as it's a fresh look, but I'm unsure whether it really suits the car.

They're Carlsson 1/6 wheels. I've got mixed views about these too! I normally frown on aftermarket wheels as they rarely suit a car better than the standard fit items. These were on the car when I bought it, and although I've considered putting monoblocks back on the car, they have grown on me.

Here's a better picture of them:
