The warranty on my ML expires in May and i'm thinking of renewing it. Stealership want circa £680 for 1 yr, £1150 for two and £1550 for three.

Seems a lot but I guess I only need one claim to recoup the costs.

Does anyone know of any other firms who offer warranties on 3 yr old cars that I can compare the costs/services with?

Any sensible advice greatly appreciated.

Alfie,

when I had my C280 I looked into getting the warrenty extended - found this place Warranty Direct (WARNING - REALLY annoying music on their site!!) which were decent value at the time, roughly half the cost of MB. Never actually ended up using them since I sold the car instead, so no idea how good they are and how the claim limits compare, etc, but the premium price was decent enough...

Hi,

I had a bad experience with a company called Warranty Holdings and what warranty companies called "Betterment clauses".

The situation was that I needed a new engine, which they agreed to replace, after much wriggling, however they would only pay for half the cost involved because they were improving the car by replacing the engine.

I finally had no choice bet to agree, but from that day on I have always been wary of warranty companies.

So check out the betterment clauses.......................

My C220 CDi W202 (3 years old at the time) came with one year's RAC Gold cover and I paid an extra £75 to extend it to 2 years. It is fairly restrictive in that they cap the labour at £34.50 per hour and there is a long list of exclusions, but at least the major components are covered in the event of breakage. I've had two refusals : the LCD outside temp display on the basis that it is a "communication device" (replacement cost £400+ might be something to do with it), and steering damper (subject to wear and tear). The autobox electrical plug replacement was covered though.

In summary : recommended as a "sleep easy" cover. Car needs to have less than 80,000 miles at the outset (but check this, I have also seen 60,000 written somewhere) and a full service history.

Warranty Direct will not sell a warranty for my privately bought 01Y CLK55. And my attempts to buy a warranty from MB have led to a phone number which is never answered. Apparently, MB warranties are handled by Mondial Assistance now.
