I'm pretty sure I've cracked it. It was simply a slight fuel leak from the low pressure flow and return pipes on the fuel pump. As suggested by Ollie I renewed the pipes and clips and so far it looks good
On inspection the pipes themselves looked in pretty good condition, but I was surprised how weakly the new clips grip the pipes. I wouldn't be too shocked to find it was just tired clips causing it. If the leak returns I'll try old fashioned Jubilee clips done up to a couple of hundred foot pounds
