What 1990's SL would you buy, and Why?

Don't fancy a newer model then Ian ;)

Can't see the point. Mine looks great and hums sweetly. The only thing I might go for is a panoramic roof, otherwise, je suis content!!

Is this Almandine?

The advert describes it as Ember Red but I believe the correct name is Amber Red 548 - also known as Firemist in some markets and optionally available on Sprinter panel vans.

This is my car - Almandine. Other colour is above.

Nice looking car, but pictures aren't a reliable medium for looking at colour comparisons.

In fact a very nice looking car, as are all the ones that have been posted.

I agree John, totally.

I do know that the picture of mine was taken with a UV filter on the lens, so the image is a really good representation of what its like in real life. In spite of the fact it was taken in direct sunlight!

Thanks for the kind words, mate.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that, depends on what type of monitor you're viewing the image on ... how it's calibrated/adjusted ... even how long it's been switched on! Nice car though :)

Looks beautiful Jonathan.
Rear seats make it look quite different from mine (IMO).

Good to see you don't have the staining on the speaker covers like I do.
The grills appear as dark circles on mine due to dirt build up.
Took one off this weekend and tried cleaning it which has greatly improved it, but I may get some new material instead.

IIRC the speaker grille covers with material were a horrendous £35 + VAT each for a bit of injection moulding and grille cloth!

That's made me think, how is the material attached to the speaker cover? Can it be taken off and washed? i suppose the other options would be to replace the material and re-fix. Would that be possible do you think?

J.

I've got some photos of removing the lower (bass) panel, I took at the weekend. The panel is held on with a screw next to the puddle light. You then remove the puddle light using a blade screwdriver (pops out) and slide the panel forwards and drop it down and off. You'll see the material was glued onto the panel on the back edges, no glue on the front side.
I removed mine - glue was so old it didn't take any effort - then used some Groom to get the dirt out and then finally hand washed. Hung on the line to dry then ironed :D before putting back on.
I used PritStick on the back of the panel to provide a sticky (and not messy) adherence.
I will be looking at removing the others (only done 1) over Easter ...

Anyone tried removing the smaller mid range cover?

Any suggestions on where to get replacement material?

HTH.

The mid-range cover is part of the door card on your car.
I can see the grill is part of the door cover, but the cloth cover does that just clip onto the door card, into the 5 black holes surrounding the grill?
How easy will it be to prise them out without taking the door card off?

IIRC you can't - the grille and cover is glued together - this is then glued to the door card. You might be able to part them gently but I haven't tried myself. The door card only takes 5 minutes to remove if you want to have a go at it.

Many weeks\months ago I asked my good lady if she would like a nice sports car purely for a second vehicle, she laughed but quite liked the idea.

Unfortunately she has changed her mind (women!!) :) However I asked her what she would really like as an extra special treat. Expense was secondary to enjoyment.

This is what she wanted.

I have deleted the company name and also the product. It has come all the way from Australia and that is all the clues anyone will get.

What do we think it is? The picture shows the crate being removed from a lorry and merely placed in our driveway

I would personally have loved her to have had an SL. The pick of the bunch for me was the one owner red vehicle, but it lacked the wood trim.

If I were in a position to drive I would undoubtedly buy an SL, but probably I would buy the AMG (I just love the throaty noise of that engine)

A big thank you to everyone, especially stats, who has tirelessly posted some excellent links. THANK YOU one and all :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Regards,
John
