Morning gentlemen (and ladies), could anyone advise me what the smallest wheels I can get away with fitting to my new E220cdi sport estate that currently has 19s on.

I have made the mistake in the past buying the smallest wheels and then realising they won't go on due to the brakes.

I'm after a winter set of wheels and tyres so want to get the smallest wheels for the cheapest tyres plus more tyre wall incase of hitting any curbs.

Thanks in advance

Si

Did you get a manual with the car (often found in the glovebox)? If you did, the info. you need will be in that. If not, someone else will know.

lol

Thanks and yes I did get a manual. It's digital on command now btw ;-)

My concern is I believe the sport has bigger brakes than the SE so I wanted to make sure I didn't opt for wheels that were too small. I've made this mistake in the past

They come with 18" a standard on the Sport and think you're going to struggle to get anything smaller than that to fit due to the brakes.

yeah 18" is standard. I guess I better get that confirmed with the dealer then :-(

18" isn't going to be cheap

I have a W212 E350CDI Avantgarde Saloon and you can definitely fit 16's on that (8 x 16 ET46 5 Twin Spokes as used on the SE to be precise), but they are very tight over the standard calipers and the manual notes: "R16 Not in conjunction with Sports package code 950/952".

However, there is no such note against the R16's for the E220CDI, so I suspect that they may fit. I wouldn't bother checking with the dealer as at least one told me that the wheels I mention above wouldn't fit my W212. Instead, give MB Customer Services a call on 01980 245000. I found them most helpful and they even confirmed what they'd told me over the phone in a followup email (which meant I had a comeback if the wheels I ordered didn't fit :) )

BTW, you'd need 225/55 R16 99 H XL tyres on the S212 if the wheels are OK.

I put 17's on mine for winter tyres - fine. It's a 350 sport.

Thanks guys thats brilliant information.

There is a set of 17inch wheels on ebay at the moment so I might have a crack at them with confidence now. I'll also get on to mk mercedes for a definiative list.

Can I ask you both how your cars handled with the winter tyres on in the snow ?

Thanks

Do make sure you check the offset is one of the "approved" options (check in your handbook or online) before bidding.

In short, very well. The most impressive aspect is the braking performance, and the traction and cornering capability is good too. Do remember that it's a long, heavy car though and winter tyres won't defy the laws of physics. It's still relatively easy to get the car to go sideways in a turn if you carry too much speed and/or are too heavy on the throttle, but the difference is that it comes back under control rather than just skating off with you as a passenger :)

I also put 17"on my E350 cab sport with AMG kit, no prob at all and winter tyres are great.

This set of wheels is fine

They come over a 2010 onwards E class W212 SE model which runs the 17 inch wheels from factory
