Hello

Looking at putting my own plate on a car I am buying.

The Car had a private plate and the V5 is not back
Currently the MOT is for the private it had on
The tax disc back on the original number plate
I've insured the car and have the certificate for the original number.
I have my number in the retention ready...

So basically

I don't have the V5 and the MOT I have is for the previous owners plate.

I guess the V5 and MOT will arrive soon but is the above ok to put my plates on it???

Thanks and hope ^ that makes sence :)

You need to be careful here as technically the car needs a new MOT - the certificate CANNOT be re-issued with a new reg mark - I've been caught out with this before.

^ So I need to get an MOT on the car with orginal plates or will when I take everything to the DVLA will they send that off to be changed.

Its the V5 I thought I would be caught out on...

Is this a new requirement? It's been a while since I've transferred a plate, but I've never had to get a new MoT (which would effectively increase the cost of transferring the plate if one or both of the cars were more than 3 years old). I agree that the MoT certificate cannot be re-issued with the new registration, but in my experience the DVLA/DVLO have always amended the original MoT certificate to show the new registration, accompanied by an official stamp. Is suppose this may have changed recently, though.

I was told I couldn't get that done last time I transferred - I can't remember when it was actually - The car had to get a new MOT to get a new certificate with its 'new' reg on it - so yes, I guess it does add to the transfer cost.

That was at the DVLA office in Preston, btw

im sure you need to fill out the retention certifcate for yor private plate send of the exisitng MOT and photocopy of tax disc and DVLA will send out the new stuff ....
also i think you need to send the v5 document so they can send a new one with the private plate reg.

DVLA will send you back the approval and tax disc then tell your insurance company and plates on the car . then the v5 comes through the post .

i think thats what happens
