What exists on an old car that most people wouldn't recognise today?

Two more:
  • Transmission Brake
  • Pre-selector Gearbox (that one would get a few drivers confused as to how to use it!)

Naturally aspirated diesels. What no turbo?

Last ones i can think of were various VAG models using SDI n/a engines. No doubt killed off by EU emissions standards.

To be honest any oily bit would be unrecognised by the modern motorist ...

Roof guttering

Push rods.
Static seat belts.
A pippy lens bit that let the driver see that sidelights were on (Rover 2000 had them).

A fuel filler that was hidden behind the folding rear number plate.

Bonus points if you can name the car.

White stains on rear seats.

Vauxhall's ingeniusly designed hazard light switch that could double as your ignition key.
I remember the '63 Vauxhall Cresta PB I had in the late 80s where the headlamp switch doubled as the interior light switch when you pulled it. Then some years later I had a Vectra as a company car & was quite surprised to find Vauxhall were still using that set up.

A slight variation on the theme from two wheels.

When a motorcycle used the same lever for both kick start and gear change.

Again bonus points if you can name the bike. I only know of one make that did this.
