Realistically? Its an 03 plate E320 CDi (No valeo). Full service history and its done 70k miles already.

I know build quality was not the best with the 03 W211's, but no major issues came to light in its history. Although a heat valve was replaced i think during its service.

Looking at the posts by people who own W124's, W202's etc. It seems the cars are bombproof apart from the odd rust issue here and there.

Can a W211 last for say 20 years, if it used on a daily basis?

Not that i plan to keep it that long!

None of the W123 or W124 cars have survived 20 years of daily use, without a good deal of service, including new parts.

The W211 would likely need new suspension joints more often than a W124, just because it is optimised for better handling (lower weight parts). Cost could be a parts issue too, like any modern car is more cost optimised than those on the oldies.

And you are wrong about the build quality, apart from the few (quite a few, ok) recall issues, the build quality is pretty much on par with later model years or any car from the same time.

If and when electronic parts fail after 20 years, those would be a lot more difficult to replace than the "electronic" parts a W124 when it passed the 20 years age. Actually it could be more than electronics parts, the sophisticated mechanical parts may be a challenge too.

We hired one with a driver in Kraków last year - 450,000 Km on the clock and smooth, smooth ride.

How old was that car? I was reading from another forum about an E270CDI from 2005 that had 630 000 km on the odometer. 100 000 km per year is pretty common for taxi cars but it looks like some cars can do a lot more.

MBs only seem to die from lack of maintenance.

What criteria are people using to determine the 'max' mileage possible in any model of car? I would say when the vehicle needs a repair beyond economic value.

Although if you have a thoroughly maintained vehicle, it may be worth slightly more than market value to you as you'll know it's been looked after properly.

Both of my cars are around 20 years old, still got many miles of happy motoring left in them :)

There have been a few posted recently in the ebay section with over 350k on the clock.

I would suspec that 500k should be attainable with regular servicing.

But will any of us ever keep one that long! ???

I can never understand the thing about needing a repair beyond a car's economic value - it's insane to sell an old car just because it needs an expensive repair. If you do, you then buy a younger car which is still depreciating quickly, and may still be a heap of trouble anyway. Stick with what you have, repair it, use it until it is worth next to nothing and therefore can depreciate no more, keep it looking smart, and laugh at the idiots who pour their hard-earned cash into the pockets of dealers.

spend little but spend regularly on your Mb and will reach astronomical mileages... prevention is better than cure.

Your car will be capable of very high miles but of course there may be the odd breakdown along the way..

I have seen this question before, the answer is that there is no maximum mileage. Everything can be repaired or replaced therefore the car will run forever unless you choose to retire it.

This is very much unlike people: technically no-one has ever died of "old age" but some illness or other has finished them off.

I was over at a mates a couple of weeks ago saying my 221 had 'already' clocked 24k miles in a little over a year. His 2002 S500 had 260k on it! Apart from service items it has needed a pair of new exhaust cats and that's it:D
I suspect mine is not run in yet!;)

If the vehicle has regular (10k) oil / filter changes and transmission oil/filter every 50-60k 100,000miles easy
You might suffer from a few split turbo hoses and an alternator
But i have seen many that i have worked on with 250,000+
There are lots of PCO drivers running around london with that sort of mileage some might be on their second gearbox but still the same engine.

Make sure you get the gearbox fluid changed.

My E55 has 108,000 and my C180 has 159,000 and they still both get a good spanking where ever i go. I dont ever have to turn the radio down and listen out for noises or worry.
When i am out in the RS6 that is the case - Mercs are so strong there engines infact its down to the electrics being so sensitive that all the warnings and bad press come about - technical complexity.

17 years old, a few trackdays, the odd europe trip, used daily by my friend for 4 years and now me (Not as regularly, still 50K in 2.3 years) and the failed parts are......

Throttle module..........

It has cost a lot in oil changes though every 5000 miles, also coolant changes every 2 years, All new suspension including subframe mounts etc only once in 17 years (Well, this July infact) but apart from that it has been incredibly reliable.

I put this down to genuine dealer parts, regular servicing, regular cleaning.

Things like washing the car on a regular basis, sensible warm up routines, regular oil changes etc.

The car has mainly been garaged all its life though, in mine it is in a heated garage and the 2 owners before me it was also in a heated garage.

Just keep on top of things and be proactive in your maintenance.

Dave!

I have a customer with a E270Cdi. It has 470,000 miles on it. He rearely services it at all.

Its on its second gearbox now.

When did he get the new autobox. How much did it cost him? Did he change the ATF etc when he should have to preserve the box?
