What`s with matt black lately

I spent a bit of time in The Gulf region where people who travel at speed in the desert spray a clear coating onto the cars to stop the sand blasting the gloss off the paint work. It is easily removed if you want the original finish back once the trip is finished, but many people left it on as a bit of a statement of their travels. I wonder if all this started as a MB option in the GCC countries where without the coating the car ends up matt in anycase - and caught on as a kind of status statement?? "Look at me, I travel across deserts" type of thing....!!??

I have to say I do not mind the look on larger cars. Smaller cars look a little silly IMHO.
