What was your first ever car?

Ford Escort 1300 Mk1 ORG 245H. On Lotus Cortina steels. Brilliant gearchange. An engine coarser than Bernard Manning.

A Peugeot 309 GL (may have been a GE). At least that is what it was in theory. In reality it was a mid 80s pile of rust. A rattly old pile in every sense of the word, but it didn't matter. I was 18 years old, had just passed my test and it was MY rattly old pile. FREEDOM!!!

K

My dad had one of these in the 80s and as a nipper - my memories of them are the strange flat horizontal speedometer which read up to 100, the vinyl (I think) dark red seats which burnt the back of your legs in Summer if you wore shorts and the really quite noisy gearbox which made a loud whirring as you changed down.
Were the seats murdered-in-cold-blood colour? I know the shade, :D

1976 Spitfire 1500 for me, BRG, with tan hood and interior. Twin straight-through cherry-bombs and... a manual graphic equaliser/amp powering speakers in the rear panel

A baptism of fire into motoring. I had filthy fingernails for all the years i owned it, and i was never on time.

Loved it to it's nuts and bolts. Most fun car to own I've ever had.

They weren't that far off IIRC - probably a touch lighter in the Austin!

:D

Austin Cambridge MkII Auto 1960 ish, Bought in 1970. Similiar to:-
280px-Austin_A55_mkII_Cambridge_1959_front.jpg

Mark 1 Ford Consul 1954. Reg no 590 AMY, bought in December 1966 for 20 quid. Dad paid for insurance which was 21 quid.
3 speed column gearshift, bench seat, ideal for a 17 year old with a young lady snuggled up...

1959 Ford Popular, ESB 532, cost £10 in 1968, sold 4 months later for £60.

All these modern cars around...mine was a 1954 Ford Pop (like in pic, same colour), nowhere near as swish as yours Duncan...:D

If I remember correctly, I paid £12 for it in the mid 60s (well it was in good nick!). I passed my test in it, I was taught by my dad, who also taught me to maintain it.

I was very proud of that car because none of my mates had any car at all (I was very popular). Not much of a bird puller, that didn't happen until a Spitfire came on the scene - women, doggghh! Other cars I moved on to included a Ford Anglia 105, a Hillman Husky and a Singer Vogue.

Those were the days...

I went through 6 gearboxes, sheared the final drive shaft on 5. Could change complete gearbox in 30mins by the time I installed the 6th

1973 Ford Capri 1.6 XL in black. The most unreliable car I ever had but I loved it and yes it had fluffy dice :) The original shape with the boot not the hatchback.

I "think" first one was a fiat 127 1050cl (SBF980W). Fantastic little car, got stolen.
Then i got a Mazda 323GT ( SHE583Y), got written off and then an Alfasud Ti (A544TUC). Would love another one even though it chewed up driveshafts on a weekly basis.
the registrations might be a letter or 2 out.

MG Metro (AMV 439Y), much maligned by the motoring press but I loved it.

Fresh out of The Sweeney!

MG Metro (AMV 439Y), much maligned by the motoring press but I loved it.

I learned in one of these (my mum's one to be precise).

A lot of old cars are maligned, and whilst I don't doubt they had issues, it was a very reliable car - and reasonable on performance (and sound!) considering what it was.

I wasn't allowed to use it after I passed, so when I passed, I had to sneak off as my driving instructor lived down the same road...

Many people are quoting the plates. I can easily remember all mine and those of my parents - is this the norm for most on here (I'm assuming it is from what I know of people on here)?

I've certainly experienced people who don't know their own plate - and one who has a personalised plate and can't remember half of it!!! WTF...

Ford Cortina 2.0 GL, 4 speed manual, Dark brown with beige interior.

The registration was ALE 38Y. I remember it well. Fantastic rear wheel drive car.
